Silent Define R5 cooling and fans

Otonel88

Hy guys.

I am trying to decide on the cooling setup for the new build that will come in the next month.

I have in mind a silent build with a GTX 970, i5 4790k ( overclock ) inside a Fractal R5, non window version(better sound dampening).

The setup should be silent as I like my ring to be silent even when gaming and my gf sleeps :D

I don't have the budget to go all water-cooling for the CPU and GPU, so I was thinking because I am overclocking my CPU to get a water-cooling kit from corsair or nzhx or other brand. Not sure of the brand so maybe somebody can help me with a good one. Also for the kit, I was thinking to change the stock fans and go for Noctuas' pressure fans, for better cooling and silence. So this is for the CPU cooling.

For the case, I was thinking to get some Noctuas' fans as well to maximise air flow and keep everything silent.

And here come the questions :D

CPU air or water-cooling to be silent and also allow for overclocking.?

Is is worth to replace the rad fans or should I stay with the stock ones for the recommended kit?

What case fans to use?Noctuas' or others?

I want to mount the CPU cooling kit in the front of the case(not at the top, as I will have to open the modu vents which will make the PC less silent).

Will there be enough airflow in the case? Should I put an intake fan at the bottom of the case next to the PSU to help with intake? I will have only one exhaust at the back of the case.

Any suggestions on the setup and components are welcome.

Thanks :)

The fans are fine. I recommend having 5 fans. 2 in the front for intake and 3 in the back and top for exhaust. For a CPU cooler get something like a H100i or 212 EVO

24 fps for that "cinematic" feel

After a couple weeks of behavioral sciences at my school I can easily conclude my parents need to grow up.

That's the thing. I want to keep to top closed. Therefore will be only one fan at the back.

If you keep the fans on a radiator get static pressure fans (SP). If they are just normal case fans, get air flow fans (AF)

Yep. That's what I was planning. NF-P12 PWM for pressure on the rad, and NF-S12A PWM for airflow.

Those are some really quiet and awesome fans!

Yes. I heard good things about them. My main concern if i have two for intake that will be put on the rad in the front, will there be enough one at the back? I was thinking to do one more at the bottom near the pus for more air intake, but then there is more intake and less exhaust. Fractal should have done something like the NZXT H440, where they have that extra space at the top for exhaust on the side without allowing sound to escape directlly. Maybe in the Define R6.

I'm not a case expert so wait for someone else to answer :D

Any suggestions for CPU coolers? Silent ones. I was thinking to get a cooler with a single 120 rad. Are they any good?

Get a Noctua NH - D14 its a massive air cooler that performs like a H100i while being quieter also get NF - A14's for the R5 since it supports them and you get more airflow at lower RPM's I personally have an R5 and have used these fans with it the only noise I could hear was the PSU fan and I have the windowed version so the solid panel will probably help with that.

What if I overclock. How will the NH-D14 handle the cpu temperatures.

You absolutely need the bottom intake fan, especially if you put the radiator in the front (as that will be returning hot air into the case.)

Trying to pull a lot of air in through the front is also a recipe for noise.  The air will have to come in through those little side openings, and turbulent flow is noisy flow.  If you go with an AIO you might actually get a more quiet build by mounting the radiator on the top with the fans in push configuration.  you certainly will get better performance from the radiator that way.

Otherwise I'd agree with the suggestions to go with the Noctua air cooler, and the Noctua fans.

Overclocking means more heat, and more heat means more airflow, that always means more noise.  Exactly how much depends.  The best approach is to set up some sort of fan control system (mobo, or otherwise) and run your overclock in adaptive as opposed to always on.  That way the fans only ramp up when necessary and when you are doing less intensive operations everything stays nice and quiet.

In the end I think I will go with the Corsair H90 at the back of the case. This was I can keep the top vents closed, have fresh air intake at the front, and maybe at the bottom of the case.

Air cooling is quieter.

If cost isn't a concern, NF-A14's or Silent Wings 2's would be great. An intake at the bottom and rear exhaust should be enough.
