does anyone have experience with this lens?

i was looking at getting the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens and wondered has anyone on this forum got some experience with using it.

use case scenario, action shots, maybe some landscape of beaches and water and most of portraits.

so i wanted to know how it would fair on a canon 550d

i have a little experience of using it with the 5D mk3 in store, the picture quality is good and the lens is pretty sturdy and worth it's weight(attached to a 5D mk3) if you ask me.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

The lens is amazing as a walk around lens. It's always attached to my 60D. I use it for city scapes and the occasional portrait. It is not the sharpest lens though.

for a zoom lens it's far from bad, only primes can get theoretical(or real) perfect sharpness.

just noticed, SparkySamZa don't forget to follow topic's :P

Depends if you need the range, if you want something faster maybe look at the tamron 24-70 f2.8, which is an EXCELLENT lens

tbf i would love the lower aperture, as that is what i need more but i also need that extra 30 mm just for the action close ups.

have ever seen a camera lens before? the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 is probably one of the best lenses on the market and one of the highest reviewed lenses on DPReview that isnt like £50k or a crazy prime

That 24-105 is the cheapest worst L lens and is not that great F4.0 is too slow for action stuff,

WAIT I just realised you have a 550d, there is NO point buying a full frame lens....17-55 f2.8 would be a better option or something like that

You might also want to think about focal length, 38mm at it's widest on a cropped sensor camera like the 550d. That's not that wide. But how this effects you depends on your photography. and what you like to photograph.

Well 18mm on a cropped sensor is 28mm.

Never said it was bad. Its a pretty damned good value for a zoom lens.

I second this notion, if you dont need a zoom that reaches into the tele range, the 17-55 2.8 by canon and tamron are pretty amazing. Just make sure you get a filter for it.

Abit late to the party here, But the 24-105 is pretty much my go to day to day lens when I don't feel like carrying multiple lenses. If you're running a Canon and you don't have one of these in your arsenal then you are really doing it wrong. Of course there are better lenses out there. But you can get your hands on the 24-105 for pretty damn cheap considering how good it is.

If you want something a tad quicker then the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 is a really really good lens. But you can quite often find the 24-105 f4 for a tad cheaper, at least you can in Aus, you'll get more of a range out of it. You just miss out on a bit of the quickness that you get with the Tamron.

The other factor you need to consider is that you aren't using a full frame sensor, So that 24 is more like 38mm at it's widest. But I feel that good quality lenses are always a good investment. You'll go through multiple bodies before you go through a lens.

I've got a few pics below that I took with my Canon 5D Mk iii with the 24-105mm f4 L lens for you to take a look at, I'm by no means the greatest photographer but it'll give you some sort of an idea about it's quality.

Not sure if you have made your decision yet, but I used this lens to film many different projects and I absolutely LOVE this lens. I will 100% give a thumbs up.  So worth the money!!!

the 24-105 f4 is a decent lens, not my favourite, but it makes a good traveling lens if you prefer to bring SLRs
