Help with PFSense?

I download it on the HDD through a CD with all default settings and once it reboots it just tries to boot again and is stuck on

"do you want to set up vlans now [y|n]? nfe0:link state changed to up"

I ask because in a tutorial I watched once the guy reboots it goes straight into the startup screen and not the one I'm on. And I followed it step by step. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=txqoJiowDGI

Hi!

 

You will need to configure LAN and WAN settings on first boot. That is how the system will know which port is what.

At det VLAN question you can type 'n' if you dont know what it is.

 

pfSense is a perfectly loved and respected firewall, but as a fanboy of Sophos you should try out that too.

So I guess I probably need two nic cards right? I thought I could set this up first then buy the nic cards. is that why this isn't working?

Well, You can use your motherboard one, and you can by a second one. :)

There is no point in having a pfSense machine if you only have one ethernet port. Unless you want it to serve as a DNS/DHCP server but even then...

 

If you don't have two ethernet ports, you need to get another NIC and you should buy one with more than one port, because expansion.

Yes, you would need two NICs. For testing you can use only LAN for now, but you wont be able to much more than browsing around. And for that you can rather use a virtual machine.

The mobo Ethernet port is terrible. Super slow

Thats OK, as long as your WAN speed is < 100 Mbit a software NIC (mobo NIC) is perfectly good.
