Power Supply cable question

If my gpu (970) has a 6 pin and an 8 pin connector and my psu has a cable with both a 6 and 8 pin connector on it is it okay to use that one cable or should I run two separate cables?

With a 970 it's perfectly fine to use one cable with two connectors. It's GPUs with very high power draw like the 295X2 where you want to use separate cables.
