Packing desktop on a plane

I plan to fly to Canada for my studies, and I will bring my desktop with me. I will also bring a monitor which I will put in checked luggage like Linus in his CES 2013 video. For my computer, its size fits right under the limit of a carry on for my airline, so I will bring it as a carry on so that it doesn't get thrown by baggage handlers. I will uninstall my grahpics card and hard disk and wrap it in bubble wrap. Is the protection enough? Do I need to bubble wrap other components too? Should I pack it on a collapsible 2 wheel trolley or other solution? (FYI, carry on baggage limit is 36(h)x23(w)x56(l)cm)

The gpu and any large hard drives are the main thing, but large cpu heatsinks could also cause considerable damage if banged around, so if you have one of those, it would also be wise to take it off...

Bubble wrap should be plenty, but just watch out for any static/ if you have the anti static bag it came in, you could use that for extra protection...

Same as above.. Heavy coolers, GPU and HDD's (less important if your handling it) should be removed and packed separately..

What i do is cover my mobo with some stiff card, then fill with packing material and put the wrapped components back in..

I have had damage before but that was diue to the handlers using the box like it was a football... knocked a fan off it's housing, tore out a Hdd with screws in and the clam shell packing for the case (origonal box etc) was shattered to hundreds of bits.

It all still survived though and the case is fine too.

Monitor wasn't so lucky. but a little blotch on the screen and the airline paid for a new one (European laws.. if it's damaged / lost / delayed, they have to replace / pay for it or cover your needs till it's returned to you)

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

Quote or @dzzope to get my attention..

Take out everything loose and pack it away, bubble wrapped in your suitcase and between layers of clothes

OR

I would also take out the RAM and heat sink and wrap those too. Other than that you should be fine.

GPU = Anti ESD Bag + Bubble Wrap

HDD = Anti ESD Bag + Bubble Wrap + Put In Parked State

CPU Heatsink = Bubble Wrap

And that's all I can recommend.

Granted, we don't know where that system is implemented, or if it's a common thing, or if it's malfunctioning, or ANY details behind the video but GOD DAMN is that terrifying.

Personally, if you're super afraid, I'd just ship the machine, don't take it on the plane with you. A local shipping place by me shipped my 650D build (GPU and HDDs taken out, mind you) for around $65. That includes packing the s**t out of it, securing it, and all shipping costs. Well worth it imo, especially if that's what baggage systems ACTUALLY do.

But I guess unless you pay a private car service to drive your build to your new destination, there's always risks. (Angry UPS employees, baggage-sorting-death-machines, etc...)

Holy mother of Jesus. #PunchingBagd

I always imagined people who handly the language to toss it around and what not, never I would have thought there was a freaking metal fist robot arm doing this.

*thinks of the time when he worked as a parcel sorter, funny times*

PS. I would do what Shadow said.

I wouldn't bother taking my PC case with me, would buy new one at place I'm going to.

Make sure the luggage is packed (so your stuff is fixed in place and doesn't move around) and all the components/boxes are surrounded with something soft to absorb any possible impact.

For that machine, if you look it didnt hit the other bags nearly as hard. Im assuming the first one had almost no weight in them, and some bags are over 100lb, so they have to be powerful.

that being said, My brother is a baggage handler. Your bags are literally thrown. theres no other way to do it in the time people expect flights.

Buy another case, same or cheaper and just rebuild the system on the other side. For monitor, i would just buy another monitor on the other side and leave it there.

I recommend not bringing too many unnecessary things for show if you are flying back and forth very often.

take it apart and put it as a carryon which is what I did

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

I'd probably take most of the computer apart, wrap it in anti-static bags & bubble wrap, and stow as much in a carry on as possible. That way i know that it's not going to be damaged.

I feel bad for you if you have a custom watercooling loop though, ESPECIALLY if it's acrylic tubing
