Stepping up from a 212EVO

Circs
Go to solution Solved by Fulgrim,

Yeah, I was just hoping I could get away with a $50 - $70 upgrade on this. Figures that it would want more of my blood though! Any less spendy recommendations or should I just accept my fate?

The Phanteks PH-TC14PE has a $15 rebate, whatever the hell that thing is, bringing it down to $60 on Newegg.

Wondering what you folks would suggest as a slight step up from my 212EVO. It seems like for any decent improvement I'm looking at $90 dual tower heatsinks or $90+ AIO water cooling, which seems disproportionately more expensive than the $28 I spent on my 212EVO. I'm putting this on top of my 4670k to shed a bit more heat from the little beastie. The EVO even when set up in push/pull and using GC-Extreme atop my delidded CPU isn't keeping everything as cool as I'd like at load. Case airflow isn't an issue at all and ambient temps (inside and outside the case) are nice and cool.

I'd like to keep everything reasonably quiet too so I'm wondering if I should just bite down and open my wallet for a 1.25kg giant dual tower/a decent AIO that will run me $100 or so, or if there's a nice mid point in between.

1. Overclock until the magic smoke comes out. 2. Modify until broken. 3. Fix and repeat.

Pretty much anything from Noctua will be great if you don't mind the looks. I have an NH-D15 and it keeps my 4690K nice and cool.

You can get an NH-D15 on Amazon for about 90. That'd be my go-to choice.

Noctua NH-D15

Phanteks PH-TC14PE

beQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3

Cryorig R1 Ultimate

Any of the above.

AIO's are noisier than a high end air cooler, due to the additional noise of the pump + high rmp fan speeds. Another argument against AIO's for me, is the additional points of failure, plus the chance of leaking.

Aesthetics - Phanteks PH-TC14PE / Cryorig R1 Ultimate

Quiet - Noctua NH-D15

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

be Quiet's Dark Rock 3 or the Dark Rock Pro 3.

They're both awesome in performance and noise and are also looking really great.

well, we are paying a premium on looks and noise, lets be honest you get a decent heatsink and add a fan and you come close to the price of these. I would bite the bullet, i do wish there were cheaper black heatsinks.

Doesn't have to be Noctua.....there are other great coolers too that are similarly priced around Noctua coolers.

I said Noctua because it's going to be the quietest, and if I remember correctly he wanted quiet.

Have you actually looked at other coolers? Just because it's Noctua doesn't mean you always go recommending them. A Be Quiet Shadow Rock Slim is cheaper than a U12S yet performs around the same.

Dude, I said quiet. Every test I've seen shows that while they may perform the same, the Noctua is always quite a few decibels quieter.

Your problem, recommending Noctua coolers because you have one and from personal experience. Just like other people, they think that once they own a product then they think it's good and other people should have. I'm saying that there are other coolers that perform around the same as a Noctua cooler and usually priced cheaper or around the same price range.

Some others coolers:

Dark Rock Pro 3

Phanteks PH-TC14PE

Cryorig R1 Ultimate

Are you serious? Dude, I've explained this to you. From benchmarks and reviews, Noctua is always the most quiet. I have one because I did my research and found that those are the best. I would've gladly gotten something else if they were quieter.

I'll just have to check my clearances, but if the big monster Phanteks thing won't fit I'll probably be mounting the H5. The extra ~300 grams of thermal mass is probably exactly what the doctor ordered. Thanks!

I appreciate your input too. I was mostly joking and for some reason it made me remeber this old book from when I was little: http://www.amazon.com/Fighting-Biting-Read-Book-Level/dp/006444015X
