Good Gaming Laptops for College?

XCRunnerrrr

Hi everyone! So, I'm going off to college soon and thinking about buying a gaming laptop. I need something that's thin and light, but also is good enough to run most games. Any suggestions? I kinda wanna stay under $1800 if possible.

If you want a thin (and portable) gaming laptop, (and don't mind it getting WARM):

  • Gigabyte P35W v2 (older and a bit cheaper, GTX 800-series) or v3 (maxwell 900 series)

^or their XMG custom cousins. Same chassis, but you can customize the internals. v2 is the one I own (see sig)

  • MSi (GS) Stealth (Pro) series.
  • Gigabyte's Aorus series. Those mostly exceed 2,000$ though.

If you don't mind having a FAT and THICK laptop:

  • Alienware always remains an option, especially if you buy second hand w/ warranty,
  • Asus ROG (some of the best bang for the buck, but those are FAAAAAAATTT),
  • ...

Heyyo,

Razer blade?

HECK NO! Overpriced like crazy... even more-so than Alienware! :P

But yeah.. avoid Razer and Alienware. They cost a lot... plus Alienware notebooks are quite heavy compared to the average notebook which would probably just be an unneeded annoyance for College.

MSI make some of the best gaming notebooks if not the best... Gigabyte get an honorary mention since they have some good ones too. Btw, are you buying from the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia or somewhere else? You listed a dollar value but prices vary a lot depending on which country you're in...

Heyyo,

My Android Phone: Exodus Android on my OnePlus One 64bit in Sandstone Black in a Ringke Fusion clear & slim protective case

p650se

It's like 5 pounds, there's a different model with a 980m even for more.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

There are starting to be quite a few good thin and light gaming laptops out there. I personally own a 2013 Razer Blade 14 and love it (ok fine the screen is a little annoying at times but that was fixed in the 2014 rev). The Blade 14 is really well made and I'd recommend getting it if you can somehow get it within your budget. Otherwise there are laptops from gigabyte, aorus, msi , and lenovo that would fit your needs.

Desktop: The Bluez | CPU: i5-3570k @ 4.5 ghz 1.296V | CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo | Motherboard: P8Z77 M-Pro | Memory: 16 GB 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX

GPU: Asus GTX 780ti DirectCu II | HDD: Some Random Hitachi 1TB, WD Blue 1TB, 850 EVO 500GB | PSU: Rosewill Hive 750W | Case: Enermax Ostrog GT (Blue Ver.)

Laptop: Razer Blade 14 2013 256GB
