1080P 970 vs 290X

Aleppi

My friend is wondering what graphics card would be best at 1080P. A 290X lightning or a Gtx 970 (whichever is best)?

gtx 970.

It also consumes less power from your cpu + you get awesome shadowplay with it.

GTX 970 = THE card to get if you game on 1080p, r9 290x will perform better on higher res though, but this is not your case. Go 970 :)

Nividia gpu's are just better in general than the current amd gpu's, this might change with amd's new r9 3xx series though.

AFAIK 970 beats 290x at 1080p

But as resolution increases gap gets closer

Finally got PS4 Pro

This ^

144p or above and the r9 290x will outperform the 970, otherwise the 970 -> AMD.

I have to add that if you go above 144p you'll not even want a r9 290x ..

For example if you go 4k you should be looking at SLI comps/980/titans anyways.

To sum it up

1080 - 970

144p - r9 290x

144p + - sli/980s/titan

Just wondering, lets assume 970 and 290x performs equally at least at 1080p, give or take 5% in different games

With 3.5 GB VRAM, and 290x's power consumption, what will you guys choose?

Asking this because, if 380x is rebranded 290x (as per rumours), it will slightly perform better, maybe less power and will run cooler. So 290x's negative point will be erased, but 970 will be still with 3.5 GB VRAM

Finally got PS4 Pro

  • G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)
  • Asus Strix
  • EVGA ACX (2.0) (FTW) Superclocked
  • MSI Twin Frozr (V)
  • GALAX HOF

The 3.5GB argument is pretty much dead for not getting a 970 you'd only ever suffer from it in 2 way sili+ configs at 4k anyway.

but the 290x does beat it at those higher resolutions.

The moment you really need that 4gb in daily use means you should be looking at a more expensive card anyways such as the 980/titan. Even if the 970 would have 4gb available at full speed, it still won't perform great on such high res.

I mean you dont want a r9 290x for 4k either which has 4gb.

The only people that can complain about the "vram issue" are the people playing on 144p with a 970. I then understand that you rather had the full 4.

I think the OP has enough info though :)
