Do you need fast ram for a NAS?

Go with the cheapest ram you can find.

If we take FreeNas as an example: It likes massive amounts of ECC memory. No real benefits by getting faster ram.

 

+ Most ECC compatible board and processors don't really support high memory speeds anyway.

You could of course go with ceap ram ..
Speed doesn't matter, because your Network is just about 1 GB/s

 

BUT "normal" RAM can not handle errors !!

So data might get corrupted ..

If you dont care about your data, you can use normal ram.

But it is highly recommendet to use ECC RAM
