SSD - 256gb or 512gb?

DotoreN

Ok so I am starting a study this year, IT software development/programming.

I had to choose a laptop (difficult choice) and I picked the Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 14"

This laptop comes in 256gb ssd and 512gb ssd. My question to you; if I use this for my study mainly, will I need the 512gb ? I'll probably be installing Virtual Machines on it such as eclipse, virtual studio etc and mainly do programming on it.

The 512gb ssd model is about 180euro more expensive.

Also if I pick the 256gb ssd, how much space will I have after the installation of windows/anti virus (+15% free space to flash).

I understand what you might think that I should just take what I need, but the problem is that I don't know. So i'm also asking a programmers (C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby etc) advice whether I need a lot of storage or not during my study of 4years.

If you don't really have a lot of files, the 256GB will do just fine. And if that isn't enough, you can just pick up a external hard drive for mass storage, they're pretty cheap.

Yeah, right guys? Guys?

Do you happen to know if the performance on the 512gb better is then the 256?

Not really, as seen here:

Speaking of experience being a programmer, having worked with virtual machines and such.

256GB is enough, I barely use any storage these days.

After everything you'll have around 180GB+ left for everything else, and if that storage somehow wouldn't work out at one point you can just grab any external HDD.

Good luck!

Some virtual machines can get really anoying in terms of space requirement, but most of the time 256gb would be enough.

To give you a perspective: My latest Java Project that has a Database connection and a gui and search functionality(about 3400 lines of code) ==> 557 Kb after compression. So in theory a 160gb SSD can hold 287.000 times that project.

If you really need more space, you could always just buy a 64gb SD card, and just leave it in the card reader.

Or the conventional external hard drive. (SD card is maybe smarter since you can not forget it :P )

Sounds good and indeed external HDD or the SD card reader is always an option in case I need even more.

Maybe a little offtopic but since you are a programmer aswell, do you know if the i7 5500u is a good enough processor for compiling/vm tasks as programming requires a good cpu?

It's a "U" cpu, so idk whether it's sufficient enough.

And thanks guys, i'll look into the 256gb one, as the laptop otherwise goes over budget (~1600euro)

That CPU is certainly fine, my laptop has a 3610QM and it's still doing everything very well so the i7 5500u will do even better.

It requires a normal CPU, so anything i5 or better is more than enough in terms of CPU horsepower.

Yes but I thought the "U" processor isn't a normal one, that's why I was wondering. It's low voltage and is meant to prolong the life of the battery in cost of performance. Also the 3610QM is a stronger cpu than the i7 5500u according to benchmarks.

that i7 is basically a really decent i5, but it will suit your needs with room to spare
