How to make Fractal Design Define S QUIETER?

Henryxrl

The only two things that I don't like the Define S is that,

1) the front panel (the one you can actually pop out) does NOT have a sound dampening foam (R5 has it)

2) the bottom panel only has 2 places for fans... actually only 1 place, since the rear one is for PSU.

So, it seems that there's nothing I could do to fix problem #2, but I MAY be able to fix #1 by sticking a SilverStone sound dampening foam to the front panel? Has anyone here tried this approach before? How's the effect?

Get quieter parts.  Sound dampening foam can only help so much, you could try it, but don't expect an insane decrease in noise.

By "quieter parts", what are you referring to?

Unless you cover EVERY inch of the inside of the case, there's always going to be places for noise to escape the case, the easiest way to fix a loud PC is to get quieter fans, and work on optimizing your airflow so the parts don't need as high of RPM fans to keep cool.

Sound dampening won't do anywhere near as much to reduce noise compared to getting actual better fans.

So I'm going to use Corsair SP/AF fans. There's quiet edition. I want to use them, but I'm a bit worried about their performance. Will the quiet edition fans make the system hotter?

The Quiet Edition SP/AF... aren't great. Corsair fans aren't that good as a whole.

If you want quiet fans take a look at options from the likes of Noctua such as their NF-P12, NF-A14, and NF-P14S Redux, as well as Be Quiet with their Pure Wings 2 and Silent Wings 2.

If you buy sound damping foam, moddiy has it pretty cheap, it cost me about $10 to do my case, it changed the tone of the noise, to a lower tone and made it slightly quieter, 5db using a free phone app that is probably not accurate.

Yes! :) I will go with NF-A14 PWM.

Consider the Redux then as well. You're saving 10 bucks per fan that would usually go towards rubber mounts and molex adapters, and still getting an excellent fan especially for the money. Looks nicer too IMO

Yeah, but it's still a great fan.

Hey I found that as well. But I think #16's recommendation is better since that's 10mm thick instead of 4mm thick from Amazon. You might want to check it out. Link: http://www.moddiy.com/products/modDIY-Sound-Dampening-Foam-Material-%2810mm%29.html

Do you already have the Define S? If not, if you're going to spend all this money on better fans and noise dampening, might as well go for the i5.

R5's airflow is not as good as Define S, I think.

Honestly you're not really going to notice the difference. I'd only want the Define S over the R5 for doing a large custom water cooling loop setup.

Yeah I'm kinda unsure about choosing R5 or S. For S, I can install one extra 140mm intake fan in the front. That's the main reason that I'm more leaning towards S.
