EVGA G2 750W Coil Whine, only under certain conditions...

Noirgheos

I've had this PSU for 4 months now, and it's done nothing but serve me well, dead silent as well. Now all of a sudden, when I boot up my PC, it starts to make a whining sound, which I can only assume is coil whine.

If I restart the PC, it goes away. If I leave the PC off for more than 30 minutes, and boot it up again, it comes back. Once again, a restart fixes it.

Have any ideas?

It's between the GPU and the PSU. It's hard to tell.

How would one check? I hold my ear to the GPU(side panel still on), slight buzzing,. doesn't sound like the whine. I put my ear next to the PSU Shroud, and its more audible.

hm. dunno.  if you have time, turn off your pc, unscrew the fans holding the psu in place, get it out of the case, and boot up. it will be easier to pinpoint the actual source if they are further apart

side panel vs open grill of psu, the sound would go through easier even if it ws the gpu. look at my previous post.

It's the PSU. Noise is louder when I hold the PSU to my ear.

hm. is it on eco mode ?

you could allways try to send a message to evga and ask about any ways to fix it. they usually have a good customer support and if you can't fix it yourself, maybe they will send you a replacement unit.

any way, still worth trying

How would I check if it's in ECO mode? And would I have to shut the PC off before switching?

nah. I change it on and off all the time. there is the power switch on the back of the psu, on top of this switch and the power plug (fan side up) ,there should be a small slide switch with eco written next to it. try switching it on and off with booting

Switching it on and off did nothing.

There is a switch above the power switch that can be turned on or off. I would power off just to be safe.

I wouldn't know if the fan was spinning or not. I know the GPU and CPU fans are, but I wouldn't know if the PSU one was.

I have a new thing to report. I was just idling today, checking emails, dealing with the whine, when all of a sudden, it stops. I turn off the PC, wait 40 minutes, turn it on again, sure enough, it's back. But it eventually stops again...

I don't think there is much to do. you could always ask evga if they would accept to send you a new one tho.
