i7 4790k vs i5 4690k

Hello,

I use my computer for mostly playing games however I do record them a lot. I would also like to start streaming games as well. When I record my games I transfer the video and audio to my Mac where I edit and render them. I also multitask a little when gaming such as talking with friends on skype, and as I said before record or stream occasionally. My question is, is the i7 4790k worth the extra $100 for my situation? My current CPU is an AMD A4-5300 Dual Core. (I made the mistake of buying my computer pre-build and have since upgraded everything except for the case, hdd, and CPU.) I would prefer getting this upgrade as soon as possible because my current CPU cannot handle what I need to to play games with friends with Skype and recording. If I go the i5 4690k route I would be able to order it around May 8th. If I go the i7 4790k route I wouldn't be able to order it until the beginning of June. Which if the upgrade to an i7 is not really needed I would not want to wait that long as my computer is beginning to become very, very slow with some newer games I have purchased.(Like GTA V, BF4, and Mortal Combat X.)

Here is my current setup:

CPU: AMD A4-5300 A-Series APU Dual Core 3.5GHz

GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 960 G1 GAMING 2G GDDR5 (Some serious bottleneck on this one with current CPU)

PSU: Corsair CX600

MOBO: MSI FM2-A55M-E33 (Upgrading to ASRock Z97 Pro4 with new CPU upgrade)

MONITOR: Samsung 1080p, with second old Dell 1280x1024 but this is not used for gaming, just for Skype and recording applications.

HDD: 1TB 7200RPM

RAM: 8GB 1600

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Gabe G.

For gaming and streaming an i5 will be fine. An i7 is just a bit too overkill unless you do a lot of editing/rendering

I think you'll be fine with the i5. The i7 is a bit faster for rendering but if you're not doing it constantly, it's not that much of a concern, and the i5 is still blazing fast.

If there massive difference rendering on i5 or an i7, also it i5 enough for autodesk programs like Inventor/Revit and adobe program of course.

The i5 is great, but if you need some really fast (faster than the i5) rendering then go with the i7, but the wait seems too much, so I'd go with the i5, but if you need more power, then you could always upgrade, but for right now, go with the i5

I had the same decision to make in November. Went with the i5, stuck a kraken cooler on it and it's awesome. rendering videos is still pretty quick and ive done it while playing games too but really it depends on how much use your gonna put into it. If you think you'll fully utilise an i7 then go with the 4790k but if you dont think you will get the i5.

Seems like an i5 is all you need. You can record and stream your gameplay with shadowplay which doesn't affect performance much maybe 2-5fps. You won't need the extra threads to edit them since you move them to a Mac anyway.

Honestly the i5 is a better route. With things like Shadowplay, OBS Intel HD Graphics encoding and whatnot, the extra threads don't matter much. Further, games don't seem to make particularly good use of hyper-threading on quad core CPUs and often times games perform BETTER on an i5-4690K than they do on an i7-4790K, albeit by a small amount.

Core i5. Really it's enough and a little more than what you want. If you OC you will get even more power.

If you can get the i7 on sale jump on it. if not then the i5 will do you just fine especially if you're doing the rendering and encoding on your mac.
