4690 vs 4790 for gaming

I am building a gaming pc and have some leftover money which is not enough for a graphics card upgrade, but enough to go from an i5 to an i7. I am not going for the "k" version of these processors since I am not big on overclocking, and it is also cheaper. The only difference between the two processors is a 1 Ghz difference in base and boost clock speed and hyperthreading for the i7. From a gaming perspective, would you think it is worth spending the money for the above extra specs? Or should I just suck it up, get a 4690k and get used to overclocking it?

Thank you for your input!

i5-4690 is fine already, i7-4790 is better but in gaming i5-4690 has better value. i5-4690 can even compete with i7-4790, but if you're talking overall performance then i7-4790. I'd go with i5-4690 if I were you, they're great for gaming, boost clock up to 3.9GHz.

The i5 4690 and i7 4790 have the same performance if you're just gaming. You'll really only notice a difference if you're going to render long videos. So if you don't stream/record/edit videos/photoshop or anything, take the i5 4690!

Even rendering videos and everything I mentioned will be fine on the i5 4690, it'll only take a little while longer than the i7. But as you're on a budget go for the i5 ;)

As of right now, there really isn't a need for the i7 for gaming. The 4690 is the better value, but getting the K version would allow you to overclock in the future. If you want to spend the little extra now, you can always decide not to overclock, but if you don't you really won't be able to. Just something to consider!

Oh yeah it's a habit that I typ them, as people take the k in most cases, i'll edit it.

My answer remains the same though, theres no difference between non-k and k if not oc'd anyways :P

If you aren't into oc get the Xeon 1231V3 instead of the i7, only $10 more than the 4690K and it is pretty much an i7 with no dedicated gpu and a little bit underclocked

There won't be noticable difference.

The 4690 should be perfectly fine. Only a couple games will push it hard and those games are also going to make the 4790 like a dork so dont worry

To cut it down just go for the i5 4690, you won't regret it, it's the best bang for buck gaming CPU out there!

The best bang for buck gaming cpu is actually the i5 4460, the 4690 is only like $10 cheaper than the K version, so yeah it's not

i5 4690 wins over the i5 4460.. he mentioned he's not getting the k version.

i5 4460 is a really good one aswell and there isn't a huge difference between them, but there's no reason to take the 4460 if you can take the 4690.. but yea that's my opinion.

The hyperthreading of an i7 is not gonna yield any fps boost compared to an i5 (within reason, i.e a 4790k vs 4690k).

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

Frankly an i5-4460 will fit your needs fine, and is $35 cheaper than the i5-4690.  You wont see any performance difference.

The 4690 is the same exact price as the 4690k on Newegg right now.  At the $225~ pricepoint, you may as well get the 4690k.  But again, if you don't want to overclock, the 4460 at $35~ cheaper is the best bang for your buck.  It is plenty of performance, you won't get better framerates with an i7 or more expensive i5.
