Seperate Boot and Gaming SSDs?

Tithonius
Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

Ok, so the build as it sits now is this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qfCb6h

I Would like to keep all of my windows stuff on its own drive, the reason is so that ill be able to take out the other ssd (my gaming drive) and clone it if necessary.

Is it worth it to run two seperate ssd drives in a gaming rig? or should i just get a single large ssd?

Hey Tithonius,

Having separate drives can provide some redundancy in case one of the drives fail or you need to swap/clone/format either of them. 60GB should be enough for the OS, all updates and some essential programs. You shouldn't suffer speed losses from having all the games on a separate SSD. :) I'd say go for the two separate ones.
WD Green is a great storage drive, kudos for the storage configuration.

Collecting every single CPU in existence? Is it possible? I have no idea, but i'm sure gonna try! http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/341848-dont-throw-away-old-cpus-im-collecting/

Either one is fine, though I'd go for the separate, that way you can have a hdd or something for backing up the os drive, and don't have to back up the games as well. (Yes you could just make another partition, but it will also reduce stress on the os ssd when gaming and such to use separate drives.)

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

If you were looking at getting a SSD that large i'd suggest getting 2 512's instead and putting them in raid 0

But otherwise it's a not to bad idea, however I wouldn't do it personally, where I go my SSD(with games/OS) comes with me

I would love to do RAID, but i just dont wanna do that with this build. I would rather just get a 1TB SSD

I would probably have one drive with os and one drive with games, with no RAID array.

Yeah that would be fine. I've got an 840 EVO 120gb as my boot, and a 750gb 840 EVO/1tb 850 EVO as my games drives. Performance is great!
