Just bought Intel 750 SSD, it's awesome!

CostcoSamples

So I needed a new SSD anyway, and had pretty much decided on a 480GB Intel 730 for its reliability and power loss protection (I know, not a super important feature, but my kids are always flicking the power switch on my surge protector.  I've already bricked two drives from sudden power loss!).  The 750 series was announced, and I figured for the extra $150 CAD (compared to a 730 series) I might as well go for it.

It came in the mail yesterday and I was up until 2 am setting it up as my boot drive.  First impressions are "holy shit this thing is fast".  I don't have any programs that will use its full potential, so most people would say I wasted my money.  But just from doing normal office work, web browsing, and gaming, I can notice a difference.  My old drive was an OCZ Vector 128GB.

If anyone is thinking of doing 2 SSDs in RAID 0, just get one of these instead!  Way faster, lower latency, Intel reliability, full flush-in-flight power loss protection.  Awesome!

Setting it up as a boot drive was not very hard on my z97 system.  They've been working hard to increase compatibility with previous chipsets.

How did you connect it? Just through the Sata III ports? Through M.2?

Assuming through a PCIe slot. Most people won't be using the 2.5in one for a while.

Yes, I got the PCIe card.  I plugged it right into my other PCIe 3.0 slot (I only have 2, so there is no chance of SLI in my near future).

As for availability, well I think Intel had some kind of goof up on the supply side.  They were supposed to do a full launch the day of the announcement but for some reason they didn't, and availability got pushed back to May.  A few drives made their way to retailers and I was one of the lucky few who actually got one.

Yup, availability is a mess. I got mine last week and then Newegg showed out of stock but now they're in stock again but who knows for how long: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167299

But that is only available with ASUS boards, in particular the Sabertooth X99 board. From what I understand, that isn't going to be the standard for connection either. So far it looks like it's a skunkworks project between Asus and Intel. I'm sure we'll see more indications at Computex.

Incorrect, the m.2 boards are being released on the newer chipsets from all the vendors and use the same connector, board, and cable using SFF-8639

For all the connecting options see info here.  The motherboards released over the next few months will have this connector (not the M.2 board, just the connector) built onto the motherboard.

Maybe some photos?

Sorry, I can't get a better angle without taking my system out of its place under my desk.  You can just barely see my GTX 970 Strix above it.

For consumer type workloads the SM951 due to its superior <4K performance. The 750 does have power-loss protection though if that matters.

Can you please inform me about your boot time ? Has it increased ? Because many people have commented in forums that it takes too long to boot ,restart or hibernate .... I am wiiling to buy one like yours 400Gb ... if it's doen't delay starup times...

The Intel 750 is not meant as an OS disk, which is why its slower at startup and such then other SSD's.

It was made for heavy work loads, which is where it shines. Everywhere else so is something like the Samsung SM951 better.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.

In australia you can get both pcie and normal 2.5in ones. Only problem is for the 400gb it has a price tag of $600 on both and for a 1.2tb its 1.6k so like i wont be getting one any time soon. I wouldn't mind one though.

I am not trying to show off, I just want some opinions on this storage solution and if it will work

Samsung SM951 512GB NVMe (boot drive, some games)

Intel 750 400GB AiC NVMe (Main games that I play)

Samsung 850 Pro 1TB (games that I do not play regularly)

Samsung 850 Pro 256GB (small files and documents)

What do you think about it

I will be using a 5930K with the MSI X99 Godlike, Corsair 780t and I will have two GPUs in SLI that are 2.5 slots each (not sure if it will cause problems) so could you comment on what you think about it.

Thanks for your time.

As a gaming SSD so is the Intel 750 not that great: http://www.gamecrate.com/gaming-intel-750-ssds/10632

Intel 750 is ment for workstation's, so it will be outperformed on most other areas.

You would be better off getting an adapter card and a 2nd Samsung SM951 512GB NVMe.

Other then that, it looks good.

I speak my mind, sorry if thats a problem.
