Hi everyone

Recently, I've been debating whether or not if it's time to upgrade. I am leaning towards Intel because of how superior core to core performance is compared to AMD.

The build would be mainly for gaming and semi-heavy multitasking (running general programs while gaming and/or watching a stream). What do you guys think about the x99 platform? Is that worth considering or no just stick with an i5? My budget is flexible considering I'll be using some of my current parts. Please share any advice!

NOTE: I am not looking to do SLI or Xfire

Current Rig:

AMD Zosma X4 @ 3.8

ASRock 970 Extreme3

G-Skill 8GB DDR3 1333

HIS 6950 2GB

Corsair III 60 GB

Samsung Pro 256 GB

Seagate 250 GB

Rosewill 750W Gold Rated

Planning is good and all but :

1. What is youre budget ?!

2.When you say x99 , do you mean the ASrock x99 mobo ?

3. Are you going to pick youre parts and then set youre budget towards that ?

4. Are you going to overclock the PC ?

I'm almost scared to ask what parts you'll be reusing haha

However, without an actual budget, we can't help you. You said flexible, but what exactly does that mean? $1000 - $1200? $1500 - $2500?

We need more info.

Personally I'd go X99, but that's because I upgrade my rig every 3 or 4 years and would rather be safe than sorry if games actually start using more cores.

I also like shiny things.

The smart answer would be i5/i7 or Xeon if you don't plan to OC.

Yes I plan on overclocking I would not like to gimp out on board quality. As for my budget it'll probably be around $700

I would like to do the X99 platform but since it's really expensive and probably overkill for what I have in mind, I'll probably stick with an i5. Go either H97 or Z97 depending on how things add up.

I just want a solid board that can handle a good OC while having some other nice features too.

Don't buy a GTX 980, it's overpriced! Buy 2 GTX 970s or 2 R9 290s intstead (the R9 290s would even be cheaper)

Ha, I forgot to mention I have a NZXT Phantom Tower! I'd probably go with an WD Blue drive tbh. Tell me why you selected that

motherboard because to me it seems a $73 board won't be effective when it comes to overclocking. Asus R9 290x personal preference

or higher quality than MSI or XFX?

here's something with a better overclocking board but is over budget

I think the 290x DCUII has cooling problems so i think it's better to go sapphire/msi for the card

the sapphire tri.x is definitely good, but puts you close to a 970s cost which brings all the nvidia features. definitely would suggest the sapphire though. that tri-x is a god send to the hawaii gpus :)

yep +1 for that, Vapor-X would be better but then again its already 970 price range

Edit: or 980 rather lol

i could be wrong here but i thought that the tri-x was the better cooler. been a while since i looked into the sapphire coolers though

I think on the R9 290(x) series, Vapor X was the more premium one and had slightly better cooling. It was opposite before that though Vapor x < Tri x on the R9 280x if im not mistaken.

So Sapphire all the way for AMD? I thought the MSI and XFX cards were solid...

XFX double D not so much this cooling solution is not quite enough for the big 290X from the reviews ive seen of it...the MSI gaming card is fantastic and so is the gigabyte windforce...the sapphire cards are also top dog...ASUS have lots of issues with AMD GPU's and the R9 280X/R9 290/R9 290X products from ASUS should be avoided.

...and of course any cards with the reference plastic blower style cooler on it should be avoided at all cost unless you plan to strip the card and watercool.

Also if the prices you are looking at on those AMD GPU's are less than 15-20% cheaper you'd probably be better with a cheap GTX 970...those are nowhere near as hot and just about any cooling solution will suffice...so you can go cheap.
