GTA5 crashing with oc'd gpu

DBUndeR

Hi,

Because GTA5 is quite a demanding game, I decided to overclock my GTX970 G1 Gaming. The result was 1580mhz core clock at a highest temperature of 71 with 3dmark and heaven benchmark, without any other changes on voltage, memory clock and so on. I ran heaven benchmark for about 3 hours and my pc was totally fine.

But, when I now start GTA5, it crashes after I enter storymode. This does not happen in any other game I play.

All of my drivers are up to date.

Does anyone know what could cause these crashes and what would be a solution for it?

Thnx

Happened with me too... it would give me an error along the lines of "ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT"

windows said nothing about the gpu drivers crashing, so it was not the oc being unstable or anything, but it did really drive me nuts, because my card dosent do too well on this game, and i needed the extra fps...

It did seem to fix itself when i flashed a custom bios, and unlocked 1.212v (before it was stuck at 1.187v), and im able to run 1273 mhz no problem, when it would crash on 1100 mhz before...

also having any sort of osd up, like the one on msi afterburner, or the ones for shadow play would make the game crash a half hour in...

Sometimes, gpu can pass 24 hours of stress test but crash as soon as a game is opened.

Lower the oc

Overclock instability can many times manifest only in certain games.  My OC crashes on WoW every single time while it works perfectly fine for every single game other than WoW.  It's just the way it is.

Yeah every game handles overclocks differently. GTAV doesn't like overclocks very much.

GTA V seems to hate overclocks. I had a +197 mhz overclock on my 980 since i had it which gave a boost of 1500mhz. Every game is fine apart from gta v. I have had to put my gpu to completely stock clocks to play it, I can't even go +50mhz without crashing on this game.

I own 40+games and have never had a single problem with my overclock, the fact this game won't even let me play with a +50 mhz is a joke.

Evolve did this to me to when it was first released but a few patches later and i can play at my +197 mhz again, so I know it's not me but the game.

Edit: I've had my 980 for 6 months running at my +197 overclock so it's not like it's new and I'm just starting to overclock it, this baby has been stable as a rock.

Edit 2: OP are you getting the error code ERR GFX D3D INT when it crashes? that's what I get when my Overclock is enabled.

Sometimes it cause my displayport signal to go to and i have to reboot...well it did before I put the clocks to stock.

Would also like to say I have noticed that there is next to no impact on my framerate since putting my clocks back, maybe 2-3 frames at a guess, I'm wondering if it was even worth it, My gpu still boosts to 1300mhz which is great, and I'm running cs go 4k dsr 4x mfaa at 130fps+

I lowered the clock with 1mhz, resulting in a working game but it came along with weird red flashes in-game. First I thought that it were cops lights or something but than I noticed it wasn't :P.

The game works perfectly with a 10mhz decrease weirdly..

I had the same error, but now I've lowered my clock with 10mhz and it seems to work fine. In GTA there is also no to little frame rate increase, but every frame is a bonus since I'm running at around 30 fps. Which is quite disappointing for a high-end gpu.

Yep. My 290X and GTX 970 overclocks are stable in all games except GTA V.

My 970 on the other hand, GTA V can handle the highest overclock I can get it to, while WoW crashes even at +25 core :P

Maybe I'm lucky?

I run my GTX 980 at 1444Mhz core/7.52Ghz memory and GTA hasn't crashed on me once during regular play.

Only time I get weird crash and restarts are when I change grass quality settings
