BSOD to do with ntoskrnl.exe

Nxl8
Go to solution Solved by ionbasa,

Something else I have noticed today is that certain programmes crash and can't be forced shut down using taskmanger 'end process'. The only two programmes that have done this are Raidcall and Chrome. To get these programmes to close I must restart my computer. Not sure what is causing this.

Well, after some digging into the last dump file you posted, there was a stack overflow in the kernel which caused the CPU to double fault.

This leads me to conclude that some part of your WIndows installation is messed up.

You can repair install following the guide here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

You will be left with all of your programs and documents, but you may have to re-install drivers. When you do reinstall drivers, don't do it off the motherboard disk. Download the latest from Asus's website.

I got my first bluescreen just now, no idea how/why. Computer is about 3 years old. What happened during the crash was I was listening to music via google play music streaming, had chrome and firefox open and some other things and I was playing Warframe on steam. All drivers are up to date except the graphics drivers, windows is up to date.

Okay, that sounds like it's a problem with the windows kernel according to here:

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2209014/bsod-ntoskrnl-exe-windows.html

I'd just ignore it for now. If it happens again, then I'd try memtest86+ then system repair.

Wrong, it isn't something that should be ignored and it wasn't the kernel's fault either. If you aren't going to use the Windows Debugger (WinDbg), please don't give advice. We'd only normally ask for memory tests if the output from the dump file shows memory allocation issues or corruption involving memory transactions. If the OP were to follow your advice they would be wasting time doing absolutely nothing that fixes the problem.

For reference:

@Nxl8, You have Bitdefender installed. The process that caused an IRQ fault error was "vsserv.exe". vsserv.exe belongs to Bitdefender. For whatever reason Bitdefender tried to use the windows dispatcher (IRQL value of 2) in order to get what seems to be a higher level priority for its task. This can happen if the software was running a virus scan in the background or it may be due to its bundled firewall.

My recommendation:

Either:

  • Update Bitdefender to a newer version
  • Stop using Bitdefender all together (I'm a fan of Microsoft Security Essentials + MalwareBytes)

While doing some research it seems plausible that Bitdefender's firewall may also cause this type of BSOD. If after updating you still encounter this type of BSOD, maybe try turing the firewall portion of Bitdefender off.

If you ever get more BSODs please upload more dump files.

My Bitdefender is up to date now. I am currently not using Bitdefender as a firewall I am using Zonealarm. Bitdefender is my active antivirus, and I also sometimes use Adaware for scans. I know for definite that Bitdefenders firewall has nothing to do with this as the version of Bitdefender I have does not include a firewall. According to the activity log on Bitdefender nothing was actually happening at the time, the closest activity to it was 6 minutes afterwards so I have no idea what has happened, though vsserv.exe definitely is a Bitdefender process.

Thanks for the helpful reply.

I'm not familiar with bitdefender, but from gathering information online, some of their products do include a firewall.

In all likelihood if the BSOD happened with the antivirus being up to date, it is a bug that may have gotten past Bitdefender's devs.

If all is well, and you aren't getting any more BSODS, please don't forget to mark the thread as solved, as it helps others with similar problems quickly find the solution if they happen to stumble across this thread.

If you do get more BSODs just post back in this thread, or make a new thread and mention my username by: @ionbasa and I'll take a look!

I got a new BSOD today. I think it is different from last time. Specs are exactly the same as last time I was pretty much doing the same as I was last time, except firefox was not open as I was on RaidCall.

Did you happen to have a game on in the background?

A DirectX component filed, and it seems Vsync is somehow involved. What makes this error really concerning is that it was actual x86 CPU instruction which double failed.

Looking back through this thread, nobody asked if your CPU is overclocked; Is it? How about your RAM?

This is going to be a headache to solve if it isn't the RAM or an overclock. Just look at what the debugger recommended: "Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these traps are."

Well, the manual is available here: http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/manuals/64-ia-32-architectures-software-developer-manual-325462.pdf at a whopping 3463 pages in length :o.

You better hope it isn't your CPU.

I was playing a game at the time (Warframe) so that could explain the DirectX part of the BSOD.

I have no overclocks on anything, but I did have at one point on CPU (about 6 months ago, maybe more). So I have no idea what is going on. What do you recommend I do now, other than read through that 17.6 MB monster PDF of pure text?

I don't believe I can do this as my windows 7 is not a retail copy and I got it from a manufacturer. The ISOs have all been removed and moved to a microsoft site which I cannot download them from because I have to input my serial number and it says that I must contact the original manufacturer of my PC to get support. I will do this but I do not know how long it will take for a reply.

What version of Windows do you have? 32/64 bit?

Let me know and I'll PM you the digital river(Microsoft's official digital delivery network) download link for the ISO.
