Again my inexperience shows... please help

i dont really know how to setup a HDD. just plug it in and format right? idk...but i went into disk manager and found this.

when i create the new volume it only lets me use the 2tb partition the other 700gb can NOT be used, formatted, shrank, expanded etc. at all.

(not to mention the 300gb absent in the first place if someone could explain that one to me) 

 

Is this normal? i paid for 3tb id like to be able to use it.

That 300GB missing is most likely because HDD manufacturers use 1KB = 1000B, whereas your operating system uses 1KB = 1024B, im sure you can see what I'm getting at here.

 

Could we get a picture of the entire disk manager?

And what HDD did you get?

If your only showing 2 TB it's probably because you sata ports are set to ide. It has a max disk size of 2Tb.

Change it to achi(might have that spelt wrong).

Eh I'd recommend returning it, based on reviews that drive tends to fail often.

You should initialize the drive with GPT, MBR would not allow partition larger than 2TiB, if you want to divide the hdd into many partition smaller than 2TiB it's fine to use MBR.

for x86 windows 8+ is required with a UEFI.

for x64 basically everything since vista (would recommend using UEFI also).
