Hard Drive space slowly depleting

Good day, so well my hard drive TOSHIBA 500GB 7200RPM Desktop HDD memory has been slowly depleting before my eyes. Today it went from 103 gb to 80 gb. Any suggestions to this?

that sounds like utterly and completely not enough information. having said that toshiba hdds have a reputation of... reliability? no thats not it... stopping thats the one.

 

from the description so far it sounds like you downloaded some movies.

Try bleachbit and cc cleaner to clear out some space and windirstat to see whats taking up space.

I use Bleach bit and cccleaner to clean out temp files and old windows update files some times it frees up a few megs and some times a few gigs depending length of time between cleanings. Also ive saved gigs of space using windirstat to track down large unused save files and old downloads.

are you talking about the drive's overall capacity or the free space? I would suggest using a diagnostic utility to check the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status if there are many bad sectors that are being closed as unusable. I would recommend using the software provided by your manufacturer. Also check which program does writing to the drive and what takes up so much space. There are a number of third-party programs that can analyze your drive and see what is eating your capacity. A screenshot might be useful.

Thank you so much mate. And the free space is depleting today it went from 80 to 78 for no reason, could it be the constant powering on and off of the system? i use it for like 8- 9 hours a day everyday, i switch off each time. Can this be a factor for its depleting memory?

It could be the OS itself creating images, restore points and backups. I would look into that. Check your backup options from the Windows menu and see if such image files are not being created during every power-on cycle. Also if you have another program that might be creating restore points, backups or temp files, do check its settings.

Well, since I am a Western Digital representative, I cannot recommend any other brands. I could suggest checking the WD solutions and see which one would meet your requirements. If you give me more details, I could suggest a specific drive that would fit best your needs.

Well in this case you might want to check out WD Black as it has the longest warranty, is the performance drive and works very well with more demanding applications. WD Blue is also a good option that also performs well, but it has shorter warranty and is limited to 1TB in storage capacity. Here are links to both drives:

Well, as Cap WD already mentioned, the WD black and blue are good options. HGST/Hitchi and Toshiba 3.5" drives are also good options as well.

 

Personally I'm not a fan of Seagate given Wendell's (and my) experience with them (poor reliability)

Well my supplier didnt have the WD drives at the time and i currently have a toshiba. i end up getting a 1tb seagate.. never had bad experiences with them for the past 6 years
