Custom Hand made Headphone stand (Lots of pictures) [FINISHED]

So I've been on the hunt for a magnetic headphone stand so I can mount it to my computer case. In my search I found a very few and not very good looking stands - so to change things up; I figured I would make my own. This will be a couple day build that I will be working on in my days off of work.

 

 

 

Materials -

 

One piece of Fur Wood 4x4

Couple Feet of Aluminum 

One / or two very Large magnets stolen from hard drives

and some creativity

I'm trying to do most of my stuff with basic hand tools to give a more hand worked touch. The metal I'll be using will be scored and bent

Alright so, another day off and I've already started work on the project once more. My primary goal today is to get the wood shaped 100%. I will be posting the pictures later as my hands are very sore from using files.

Fir is a pretty tough wood, I wanted to use it because i had scraps of it left over from my computer table project and I love the beautiful grain in the wood.

Looks like you've got quite a lot of sanding ahead of you 

I've used almost all hand tools, only power tools in this build are going to a Drill and a Power Sander. The power sander will only be used for the final touch before stain. I've used hand sand paper and files to get most of the wood to shape.

 

Also update 3 being posted very soon less than 2 hours.

It takes a little imagination and tools and just go for it. This project carving the wood had to get ugly before it looked pretty. If you want to do something DIY just find something and go for it.

I wish I had a 3d printer but I don't think i'd use it that much. I like the idea of making things by hand.

 

 

 

Tomorrow I'll be attaching the metal bar and working on finishing touches and possibly stain. The one thing I need to do a nice sanding job to bring out the grain and try to remove the scratchs

I wish I had a 3d printer but I don't think i'd use it that much. I like the idea of making things by hand.

It's a frustrating device that I borrowed from work and for my lack of experience has very low yield rates. Its a love-hate relationship for sure.

So I finally got most of the project finished and now moving into final touches and finishing. I picked up a UE Megaboom this morning to help me out while I work. This thing is awesome. With the project bending the metal was all bent by hand and made a angle with a small sledge hammer. This part only power tool was the drill used to drill out the bar slot in the wood and drill the holes in the metal.

I still have to sand down the wood with a 200 grit sand paper to really pull out the grain then put some sealer on it. I was thinking maybe a redwood stain (this would match my color scheme)

 

If I did stain the wood I would do a semi Transparent so it would really bring out the grain

Hmm, nice!

 

I quite liked the silver-ish look the wood had, went well with the more industrial metal bar, but out of those two, i'd definatly go with the semi transparent one, love me some grain  

 

Anyhow best of luck with whatever you choose, i look forward to seeing more!

I'll be honest I was a bit scared for you when I saw your rough in. I will have to say for just being widdled out of a chunk of 4x4 pine it turned out pretty good. It reminds me of how I used to have time to do some woodworking for myself.   Anyway, you'll have to try using some hardwood next time.

Making the rough scared the crap out of me because it can be hard to see the overall final look from a single block of 4x4. I knew what I wanted and was determined to get it. Many times through the final process I still filled here and there to finally achieve the look I really wanted.

I wanted it to match my setup that I have and thats why I went with a stain. I did a Semi - Transparent Cayenne red from Cabot.
