I need help avoiding my desire to consume.

I am researching the market to purchase my first customized desktop, and I need your help because I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.  I have an irrational desire to want the best, and find myself building unnecessary $5k and $10k computers.  I say to myself, "Hell with it... I'll just buy something with a reasonable price tag I can drive home from the local electronics store.  What's the worst that can happen..."  Then all I can think about is Peter Griffin's voice singing, "I'm a tumor-I'm a tumor," in Lois' brain.  I must take complete ownership of my rig and fully understand what I have and why I have it. Otherwise, I'm afraid the off-the-shelf, commission conflicted, bloatware laden, retail pc will result in a level of ongoing stress and unhappiness ultimately leading to my demise via terminal brain cancer as suggested in Family Guy.  I would prefer to blow my wad on the "megatron" of desktops, block out the $ sign from overzealous clicks on customization sites, and forget my bank account user id/password.  So, how do I stop customizing desktops with titan x's, 8 core processors, water cooling, sound cards, blah blah blah... So, I can get a desktop thats bad ass and a little better than I need.

The intended use of the computer only emphasizes my delusions.

I want a spot at home dedicated to getting sh!t done. i.e. personal productivity.

Slightly editing my GoPro home videos. i.e.  The ones of my 8 mo. old daughter blowing bubbles.

I am not a pc gamer, but everyone games and I would like to join. (Not a whole lot of gaming goes on for me these days, but was exclusively xbox and ps3. Halo, Modern Warfare, Gran Turismo)

Watch movies and shows with 4k capable and surround sound.

I would like to depart from macbook pro and iphone.

Want to utilize network to connect home devices for multimedia access in all rooms.

If you havnt seen the nvidia shield for tv... im pretty excited about it.

The only thing I am truly certain about is a mechanical keyboard, and leaning towards a single 21:9 ultrawide.

The most strenuous work for the pc will most likely be when I am utilizing multiple points of streaming data to run macros while simultaneously running multiple apps.

Other than internet speed, where are potential bottlenecks?

Best Regards and Good Night and Good Luck,

Col.asherholmes

TLDR: A pc I can be proud of as an honorable newb.

First thing you need to do is set yourself a budget. Only after that is when you should be looking at components ;)

indeed get a budget and ask for a spec list in the build planning section of the forum,

but for your needs an i5 and 960 (for the hdmi 2.0) would do fine

if you feel the need to spend excess money, my wallet is looking a little empty right now...

fer real though, set a budget and stick to it without going overboard by too much, as badass as a $5k computer would be, you can game just as well with $1k

How do Reavers clean their spears?

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.
