AMD Phenom II X6 1075T vs overclocked Intel Pentium G3258

Aniallation

No surprise about league. It's a game that really wants ipc and more ghz. I'm surprised you were able to average 100% gpu usage in league. I only average about 40% with max settings at 1080p while getting over 400fps at the start and averaging over 100 throughout the game. However, my i5 isn't over clocked.

This is how I overclocked my locked Phenom X6 1055t, got it to a stable 3.8 GHz for years.

This happens to be the first time I really watched a Linus video:

i found shortly after that that its bad advice

-1.5v can kill allot of boards with bad vrms.

-it can be more voltage than you need

-286mhz front side bus means over or underclocking your ram which can cause instabiltiy or require further fiddling.

i would of said (in a video so this is obviously theoretical paraphrasing)

"find your cpu vid in coretemp. bump you core voltage to 0.05v over your cpu vid [all the usual disable cnq stuff], if your running 1333 ram set your set your ram to 1066 and fsb to 250, if you're running 1600mhz ram set it to 1333 and your fsb to 240 [would do a seperate in depth guide for faster ram and different clocks] get your HT and nb speed as close to 2000 as possible"

noones chip or board is going to be at much risk by doing this, sure its not 4ghz but a 4ghz phenom is still prettyvery badass, ive got mine in a terrible ASROCK board with 2 dimm slots......and at 1.4v its at 3500mhz 250x14 happy as larry getting 550 cinebench r15 scores, if the board were to die (oh no...) id just replace it with an asus m5a78l-m/usb3

if you want an ITX rig intel really is the way to go, my g3258 is in an msi z87i itx gaming board (i got for less than half the original price brand new) and other than a shitty socket location its great, the chip however is more complicated to overclock than any amd especially if you dont know about ring busses and the sub core voltages, plus the temps are insane, and the performance isnt great, it gets beaten in cinebench by an fx4 at the same clock speed, games that require 4 threads are often resulting in it being pinned at 100% and bottlenecking on the plus side it overall performs close to an i3 for less but that doesnt make up for the mediocre performance.. you really need an i5 for modern games HOWEVER you shouldnt buy a 4690k because while its double the chip its 4x the price so the next best option is the 4440/4430 which in single core performance loses to the g3258 and in multi core performance only matches the 7 year old phenom x6,...someone remind me of why intels meant to better again.

@D3MON if I remember correctly, I ran at 1.45v or 1.44v with a FSB at 270... it oc'd my RAM from 1333 to 1440 (I remember the 720MHz, not sure how I ended up there).  It ran fine so I left it.  I did blow out a stick of RAM after about two years, but I do not know if the extra speed was the cause.  I liked the idea of having my RAM oc'd as well.

I did this on a ASUS M5A88-V EVO:  http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131733

The board had bad DIMM slots from day one but it worked enough that I did not RMA it, which I should have done.

I built a PC with i5 3570K, I would not want to go back to my AMD as my main PC... too much work for what you get on an Intel(i7 920/930) at stock.... minus two real cores ofc.  I did enjoy the Phenom though.   :D

I have a Phenom II X6 1100T + Asus Crosshair IV Formula combo (with 2x HD7950), 3rd rig, and a C2Q X9650 + Asus Maximus II Formula (CPU @3.7ghz) with a HD7970 and honestly, I haven't come across any game that these can't handle pretty well. Even Watch Dogs and FC3 ran pretty well on them. My 1100T's stock speed of 3.9ghz simply because I've not found a need to OC it for the programs and games I use it for, it's beastly enough as is. Granted, I've not tried MMO's on them, neither have I tried GTA V on them, but I expect them to do reasonably well enough. Besides, it may be blasphemous for me to say so, but I don't think I'd like GTA V.

Props to the OP for a very good review B) , makes me feel better about owning a Phenom II.

I don't exactly think I got the GPU usage graphs correct tbh  :P

lol I'm not a serious League player, I just play casual AI games in class and sometimes PvP on the weekends. I'm only level 10 :/
