Valve Giving Content creators the option to sell mods.

werto165

So the mods gets exposed to all of 2 people. Places like the Nexus give you tons of exposure and more people get to know your mod. If the modding community was about you sending files to your friends or people you know on boards it would have died long ago, that idea as a workaround for popular mods being removed from Nexus is laughable.

You're really not understanding how this works because you're dense, or intentionally doing so to make yourself feel justified in your opinion.

Good old Valve, focusing on crap that doesn't actually improve their services and instead panders to the lowest common denominator.

"Well let's see.. content creators aren't making enough money in our services... Sell mods! But we still keep the majority of the money."

This is good. Content creators need to be rewarded with real money for how much value they add, at least for those of them who are interested in doing so after spending their valuable time. People who want to give it away for free can continue to do so. Also this is an incentive for devs to make their games moddable with right tools since they can get a share of money too.

Someone here on off topic claims they would only get 25% of the total revenue which is crap. But other than that and a few other details to clarify and correct I agree.

I mean we're talking about the difference between this game:

I don't mind this at all. As long as those who set the prices set them reasonably.

I've been seeing people on Reddit say that a donate button would have made more sense. I agree, selling mods doesn't make a whole lotta sense, but donating does. Either way mod devs get money for their work.

Good old Valve... Helping people making money, while making money... They seem too greedy now.

Valve is splitting up the modding community into "actual mods" and fan made DLC.

I agree, but if you look in the picture, they're selling for around $1.50 each and that's like small dlc price, but for mods... idk... i don't really like it...

I'm surprised that it took this long for something like this to come up. Some mod makers spend a lot of time and gain nothing but maybe a name. That isn't bad but they could spend that time doing something that gives them both.

This doesn't seem all that functional of an solution though.

I think patreon has been tossed around as a viable option for this. People who want to see a mod become reality pay, and the mod is still free in the end. Kind if similar to donations.

Stock coolers - The sound of bare minimum

-Ad hominem-

Yeah I'm not being derailed here the equation is pretty simple: Someone suggests Nexus, I made a comment on how Nexus can be unreliable because they remove mods on a whim and forever. What I mean is that as both as someone using mods and someone wanting to create mods and being widely distributed, it's unreliable.

I have been stucked with no explanation for their disappearance looking for mods I distinctly remember to have used in the past and are just never to be found again or have to be dug up from a forum, another user, etc. which increases my chances of someone just sending me 40 mb of trojans and gayporn.

So Valve takes 30% from all game sales, they take money from Greenlight and Early Access, now they are taking in money from user created mods. Great?

Whats to stop Nexus from following this? Is Valve now stopping mods that are installed externally via NMM or other mod managers? Is this what Valve is doing?

GG, Valve, you're worse than Sony and MS for their DLC hungry nature. But nah, gamers here are just gonna bend over and swallow it all. Only giving modern 25%? Fuck off. You've legit done no work here. Greedy goobers.

Let's not forget Bethesda here: I'm sure they're getting their cut as well and are basically the grandparents of crap, overpriced DLC before Steam was on anyone's radar

Shhhhh, we can't bring them into this, we must keep up the anti-Valve circlejerk and paint them as the bad guys for wanting to make money like every other business!

How is it a anti-Valve circle jerk?

Valve is now letting people charge for mods that were free (all of which still are on Nexus) and people who don't know better are going to pay. Valve is praying on the average consumer not knowing better.

Valve is no better than the consoles you all rally against. They are just as greedy. Yet you just swallow up every harmful decision they enact like its no big deal.

Well good thing it's an option, right? They don't have to charge for mods. You shouldn't be using the Steam Workshop for Skyrim mods anyway, there's just way too many limitations for it to be truly viable (improper mod conflict resolution and limited filesizes as two examples.)

To clarify: It's not, but is borderline because of for example you failing to address my comment on how Bethesda is just as culpable here.

Bethesda is not the one who implemented this. Valve did. Stop conflating the issues.

Does the SKSE team get any of the kickbacks? Any mod worth using in Skyrim requires SKSE, so don't they get a cut? Didn't think so.

And you know this exactly how? I found out about this news by a Facebook post Bethesda themselves pushed through. I am also not sure but can make an educated guess than Bethesda will be getting a cut of their profits.

Again I don't know any of this, but my default position isn't to assume Bethesda had nothing to do with this at all, as I mentioned they're infamous for their DLC pandering crap of days past I wouldn't put it past them.

Your default position is to assume Valve and no one but Valve is gaining anything from implementing this, without any supporting evidence to those facts. Or at least it certainly looks like that.

EDIT: Here I even got you a pic
