Everyone always tries to overclock like crazy, but what about undervolting?

So My build is not top of the line, but it's definitely far from being weak.

My i7 4790k has surprised me so far by being able to hit 4.8ghz @ 1.296v, but what about how low it'll go on voltage at stock?

I managed to get it down to 1.088v at the stock (*Turbo*) clock of 4.4ghz. At full load it never breaks past 60c (roughly 58c) while cooled by an H100i with 4x Corsair SP120s in push/pull.

Thoughts? Is this pretty average?

The 4790K has a stock clock of 4GHz.

All this overclocking stuff.. If I got a CPU that performed good I'd under clock it. Lower temps, less strain on the CPU.. If it still performs good why not? ;D

I do this with older cpus and graphics cards that are no longer being used for intensive tasks, too.

Also @Godlygamer23 it boosts up to 4.4ghz at stock.

It still has a base clock of 4GHz.

my CPU run's at 4.2ghz with only 1.16v to the core...so i'm in fact overclocking AND undervolting right now! :P

...and my CPU peaks at 55c when gaming ;) ...and it's blazing fast.

@Godlygamer23

Alright sorry. Turbo'ed up to 4.4ghz it only needs 1.088v.

Side note: I just didn't know if that was normal? It just surprised me.

I was totally expecting undervolting and underclocking and about to think "Why in the hell would I want a contemporary processor to perform like it's from 1995," then I actually read the thread. It is pretty cool to see that people are seeing how low they can get the voltage while still staying stable. I'm not sure if all of this is cool to me because it is genuinely cool, or if it is just that I'm very inexperienced in the field and this stuff is way over my head.

@MblaZe7run

It's not something I normally do. I just wanted to make my PC even more quiet. With 10 Corsair SP120's and 2 Arctic 80mm fans in my case, it's been a challenge. But I've managed to make it whisper quiet at idle. Underload is a different story. It's definitely audible.

Run  Unigine valley and count the stutters and hitches @ that voltage, and if you say there are non, video cap or BS lol

@Tortured

Wow you're unpleasant. Reminds me why I don't like LTT forums.

Anyway. I don't have any screen capture software, so I had to use a crappy camera. It ran pretty smooth, IMHO. The overall score is being held back by my fairly old HD 7970, though.

Yea there is quite a bit of stutter and hitch, you can see see it the whole way through.

Notice the subtle stops, everything should feel smooth without halt, with too little juice on your CPU this occurs.

Also your sensitivity is cute, over an issue that I'm trying to help you with, but regardless enjoy!

Edit: and if you need a Capture program that does as little impact on your system as possible, if your running a Nvidia series, use Shadowplay, otherwise, Dxtory works well too

I think the stutter that you're seeing is from the crappy camera? It looked smooth when I was watching it.

And fyi, saying that I have to prove something in order for you to not call BS on my setup is pretty tasteless. Especially since I don't know you. The issue that you speak of means nothing to me since it looks fine, imo.

Also running an undervolted OC on my 4670k. 4.2Ghz @ 1.060v.

I use to do this back with my Athlon II x3 450 to cut a small bit of heat and power consumption meanwhile increase lifespan.

I should do this with my i5 4440, it uses just over 1V to hit 3.3GHz (the useless 'turbo' function of course).
