Rooting the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge will disable Samsung Pay

samsung-pay-02.jpg

Go Samsung Go?

I can see why this might happen for Samsung. Rooting can give access to things you shouldn't otherwise have access too, can lead to all sorts of security headaches, maybe to preserve the secure nature of their payment system they opted to brick it in the event you root.

Don't know if I really agree with that, then again you don't own the software you get on those phones and Samsung is entirely allowed to do what they want on that end.

C'est la vie, I guess.

Samsung just released two great smartphones earlier this month, the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge, which have been selling like hot cakes. Even though Samsung has cut down on a bunch of bloatware in the newer version of TouchWiz, some people are still rooting their new devices in order to disable apps that can’t be normally turned off. However, we advise you to refrain from rooting your device, as it will disable Samsung Pay, just like KNOX. When you root your device, the integrity gets breached, which is necessary for important and sensitive features like mobile payments.

Lame. We have google play, and rooted devices still work. Totally lame.

I agree with this, it would be too easy to get around security with rooting. I was actually surprised OP had the same view, as I don't think many people will.

Lame, who uses Samsung pay anyway?

I though it hadn't come out yet.

Same I think it's a good idea kinda... I mean if you can alter Samsung pay when rooted, you could probably manually enable it.

This is going to cause some users to become mad. Android without root permissions is boring and annoying due to bloatware.

I guess you really don't understand what you can do with root.

While I disagree with this, I can totally understand and respect it from a security standpoint. However, I'm sure somebody, somewhere, will find a workaround. Hell, in the past, you couldn't root without tripping KNOX. Now, it's considered easy.

boo hoo.

I'm considering getting an S6 edge, but I'm worried about it being easy to root if I get an at&t one.

Idk..... The s6 is the best android phone and enthusiasts that wants the best will get it. Because of that, it'll probably have a lot of roms available, perhaps with Samsung pay working.

Unless someone comes up with a more universal payment method for all of the Android phones, I don't think any of the methods like Samsung Pay will see support.

Same thing happens to google wallet if you root. I would use samsung pay since you can create a magnetic field and use it with any card reader, NFC or not. I don't even root my note 4 because I actually use the features samsung puts in their phones.

I reckon this cellphone paying thing is a fad anyway.  Good luck paying with that during an outage.

Cash is still king, both in terms of money and music.

hahaha grandand....."dis here automobile is a fad horse and cart will be here for ever" and the same has been said about tv, cd and just about every thing else that was new.  in japan they have been using there phone to pay for things for over a decade and its massive over there......its simple really people nearly always have there phone with them so why not roll everything into 1 device.

just used rootcloak

Samsung Pay is no big deal. But you can be sure the XDA Devs will find a way around this limitation.

i wouldnt be so sure, in the uk both the barclays app and skygo app have managed to avoid rootcloak and several other similar apps.  sometimes they fall but they release the next update, shutdown usage on anything but the latest version and bingo.  i use both of them and stopped rooting because of it

Here in Sweden we pretty much never use cash. Most people I know don't even have cash with them. Even on flee markets we use cards (portable scanners).

Cash is dead in Sweden and I hope it dies everywhere else soon. Oh and you can use the portable ones during a power outage since they run on batteries.

We still haven't moved on to NFC payments though which bothers me.

Does Google Wallet still work when rooted? The magnet strip emulation in Samsung Pay is cool from a technical POV but in practise it's only useful on the US, and soon even the US will join the rest of the world with the far superior PIN + chip.
