Well, i just blew up my PSU..

Well, my PSU just blew up yesterday.

Hi, my name is Kasper and i come from Denmark. I have an Asus R9 290x OC in my rig, with a old, cheap 750watt 60% efficiency PSU. I was playing Battlefield 4 on Ultra settings with 4K, 200% res-scale. Then suddendly just took all the power in my room. My PC can't start anymore. It dosen't smell and it dosen't look burned or anything.. I think it's my PSU..

So, i have to buy a new. I got the money for a Corsair RM850 AND a new Asus R9 290x OC. My question is, am i going to blew up my new Corsair 850watt PSU with 2x Asus R9 290x Crossfire?? I really don't want to do this again..

Kasper.

Corsair RM850 is a waste of money. Get a good 600W power supply.

Edit: Yes I get it guys, I didn't notice he was going Crossfire. Move along.

as long as you dont overclock them it should be fine

corsair PSUs are high quality, if you try to draw too much power they will not explode, your PC will just shut down

600W would but pushing it for two R9 290x's...

Hi,

Never cheap out on your PSU. I would get that RM850, as that also allows overclocking headroom.

Do you recommend it for Crossfire 290x?? I actually HAVE the money for RM1000...

He is running 2x 290x, a 600W won't suffice at all....

Doh, missed the Crossfire part. Yeah 850W is about right for Crossfire.

The Corsair RM850 is still a waste of money for an 850W power supply though.

It's not nearly as bad as the unit that just died on you, but it's way too expensive for what you get.

Based on this search, my recommended power supplies would be either the XFX Core Edition 850W (if you want an affordable but solid unit), the Antec High Current Gamer 850M (if you want a modular but still affordable unit), or the Antec High Current Pro 850W Platinum (if you want high efficiency and extremely high quality).

Don't get the RM series, it's not a particularly good series of PSU, it's quite expensive and there are much better built alternatives for the price. For example, the EVGA G2 series, Antec HCP/HCG, any XFX or Seasonic PSU etc are all better

The RM1000 model is a better deal than the RM850. As you can see there are many 850W units cheaper than the RM850, and most of them are equivalent or higher quality. The RM1000 is the cheapest model with that wattage, except for the XFX 1050W. So if you needed a 1000W power supply, the RM1000 would be okay value for money (I would still prefer the XFX unit). The 850W model just doesn't make sense for 1099 kroner, lots of good 850W units are cheaper than that.

For the price of the RM1000 (1341kr), the Cooler Master V1000 is in the same price point (1386 kr). It's based on a higher-end Seasonic KM3 design. It will offer better build quality and electrical performance. The only thing the RM series may have over it is that it's a semi-passive unit so it will be quieter.

I would recommend the CM V1000. The EVGA Supernova 850 G2 is also a better build unit with a 10 year warranty (upon registration) and has semi-passive mode (with a switch to toggle it on/off). You can go for that as well, if you are looking for cheaper that is able to power your system.

Edit: the XFX ProSeries 1050w Black Edition (Seasonic X SS-1050XM2 internally) would also be a better unit than the RM1000 that has semi-passive mode as well.

Get an EVGA 1000 P2 if you're considering a 1000 watt, it has a 10 year warranty & is better in every way except the cables. (Compared to the RM1000)

Get a Superflower, EVGA or Cooler Master V - Series PSU.

Please, don't buy the RM power supplies

This, the PSU itself is good/great, but those cables are the worst I have encountered yet, the 24-pin is almost impossible to plug in.

Its a little overpriced, but its not a bad unit.

Jonnyguru (the PSU murderer/reviewer) gave it a 9.2/10.
