Get Haswell or wait for Skylake?

Go to solution Solved by Opcode,

Skylake is just an incremental update so whatever performance came with Broadwell is what you will expect out of Skylake other than more expensive DDR4 support and all that jazz. I would buy Haswell-R now and be content until Cannonlake or Zen. Intel rarely never drops prices even after a launch of a new product.

Like the title says, should I go for Haswell now, go for Skylake when it launches, or should I wait for Skylake to launch and maybe the prices of Haswell CPUs will go down?

Prices don't usually go down. I would get haswell now, if you need a powerful computer. If you have something that you can use in the mean time, then wait.

I would wait for Skylake, its just a few months away presumably.  Unless you really need something now.  But honestly, you can't go wrong with either.  Generational improvements have been fairly small, less than 10%.  Even a 2500k still performs on par with an i5-4690k when they are both overclocked similarly.

Prices of previous generations don't seem to drop by much when new iterations are launched.

I would wait for Skylake, that's what I'm doing right now  :D

When is skylake supposed to come out?

Q3: July, August, or September.

Just get haswell now. There is no sense in waiting when you can can upgrade from that fx cpu now. I wen't from an fx 6350 to an i7 4790k. Even if you found a 2nd gen i5, that would still be an astronomical upgrade from what you have now!

I totally forgot about DDR4, I'd have to buy new RAM so haswell it is.

Honestly, if you're choosing between the skylake i7 and the haswell 5820k, just flip a coin. The 5820 is entry level "enthusiest", but its a year old. The skylake i7 is technically a tier lower, but its basically a 4790k in a smaller die with newer features. Both use ddr4. X99 and z170 mobo will most likely cost about the same. Honestly, they will probably perform about the same in most applicatins. Both are unlocked and you will probably be able to reach the same clock speeds with both, though skylake will have the higher base speed. The haswell i7 has 2 more cores, but skylake will use a lot less power.

If you will be doing things like picture/video editing, 3d rendering or are a SUPER multitasker, the haswell i7 5820k will be better because things like that take advantage of the extra 2 cores. If you're gaming, streaming and browsing, then wait for Skylake to get the newer tech.

Edit: I know Skylake will be better faster than the 4790k, but Haswell is already moe powerful than Devil's Canyon...

Devil's Canyon is the Haswell-Refresh. They are Haswell cores, and only technically faster due to running at higher stock clock speeds.

Like the title says, should I go for Haswell now, go for Skylake when it launches, or should I wait for Skylake to launch and maybe the prices of Haswell CPUs will go down?

If what you have already is enough to keep you happily gaming (or whatever) until Skylake is released, it makes sense to wait. The FX-6300 in your signature is probably sufficient to hold on for a few more months in my opinion. I'm doing the same with a Core i5-750. If you absolutely cannot continue to game with what you have in the meantime, take Haswell now.

Haswell-E(5820k,5930k,5960x) outperforms Devil's Canyon(4690k,4790k). I assume thats the Haswell series the OP was talking about.

  • 3 months later...

This is a funny read...  People keep arguing with themselves.

Here are some "facts" and there corresponding arguments

1.  Prices don't drop significantly in the future

  A) If your going to get a Haswell you might as well get it now it wont drop in price

  B) If you want the Sky-lake it will cost the same in a month that it will in a year, so you might as well get it ASAP

2.  Performance upgrades are small (10%)

   A) Get Haswell its about as good minus 10% and you can get cannon later

   B) Get Skylake because because Cannon will only be 10% better

The wonderful thing about intels "tick" "tock" is getting what you pay for... much like video cards you get what you pay for with very few outlives from the price/performance curve.

Look at the 2500k it started at 240ish and dropped to 210ish.  The 4690 started at 240ish dropping down to 210ish.  I suppose that the 6600k should start at 240ish (leak says 225).  So your looking at ~ 30$ that's 15% more cost for 10% more computing power and less heat.

Personally im waiting till blackfriday and going with whatever great deal I can find that breaks bellow the price performance curve.

i don't know why this is selected as the best answer cause it's pure BS...skylake will be better than broadwell...obviously...it's a brand new architecture...it's well worth the wait if you don't need a CPU right away that's a given.
