Would a big CPU heatsink distort the motherboard?

I am considering buying a big CPU heatsink for a budget build I am making and I found some of them that weigh almost 1kg. So I started wondering whether something that heavy hanging from my motherboard would cause any distortions. You know, like how heavy graphics cards may cause "motherboard sag" and all that. If anyone out there has experience with big, tower heatsinks, have you ever noticed any bending of the motherboard or anything like that?

If you're worried you could always use some fishing line and tie it up to the top of your case.

I was worried about it when I got my 212 EVO and put an old video card on it (bringing it close to 1KG), and it didn't bend my board or anything.

That shouldn't be an issue as long as the mounting hardware is good.

pretty sure sagging isnt gonna be an issue no matter how big of a cooler you put on it.

 

i have a dark rock 3 and i couldnt shake it even if i tried (i'd rather cut myself on it, like linus did twice, and i had happen myself as well) so i dount sagging is gonna be an issue any time soon.

You should be fine, mobo and heatsink manufacturers design these things to have heavy heatsinks installed

I put my computer on its side so the motherboard is oriented horizontally on its back for this reason. Between a 212 evo and an extended Gtx 960 I didn't want all that weight pulling down. Some motherboards are thinner than others too (not sure if this would affect warping although it seems like it would) my asus z97 is thinner than normal

No. The backplate takes off most of the stress from the cooler.
