Hello, I am starting up my own youtube channel focused primarily on build logs, unboxings, and reviews of various tech products.

I want a nice camcorder to shoot my content on, good video quality, 60fps potentially, good macro shots, and shallow depth of field.

One thing that is IMPORTANT is that I have an audio jack/port to plug in a clip mic for my videos.

What I currently have in mind is a GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition as it can shoot in 4K, and I found one for $270 on craigslist.

My budget is $500.

I've been looking at a few DSLR's but can't decide.

Hopefully someone with more experience than me can help me decide on a camera/camcorder.

Thanks,

Vincent

Don't like the Go Pro?

I do, and I was wondering if that would work for the unboxings (to provide enough detail and sharpness)

DSLR are always quite problematic for video. Maybe a D5300 at least the sensor is good.

Any good DLSR's that take video?

*Warning!*

tnx for the convenience

with DSLR/mirrorless specific you end up in the 1500+ very quickly, when you include the costs of lenses, storage, microphone and(optional) light's.

(think canon 5D mk3, GH4, sony a7s which are standalone already 1500+)

I would personally go with the gopro, it has good quality(4K), large depth of field(removes the need to adjust focus, its better then shallow depth of field IMO) and there is a 3.5mm jack to micro USB adapter in the go pro store so you can attach a different microphone to it like a rode shotgun mic, for close up/macro it will also be pretty good.

Further i would say that a dslr/mirrorless isn't worth it when you are just starting up your channel.

If you would like to have a DSSLR like effect with the go pro you could look up the ribcage mod, which is basically a bundle of lenses which you mount to a gopro, although remove the big depth of field or increase a macro effect, i don't have it myself but it appears to be quite the thing.

the only gopro downside is the fish eye effect, but you can rid of that with the software.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Honestly if you are just starting, use your phone for the first 5 to 10 videos. It may seem like something you want to do but you might hate it after doing a few once you see the amount of work past recording and editing. Oh and colour correction is a bitch. As for the go pro, I tried to use it for when I started as I already had it, and it sucked. Even when removing the fish eye effect is did not feel good quality. Once you know you like it buy a cheap DSLR, get a single kit lens off ebay (people sell them when the auto focus is broke). I would look at the 1200D or the Nikkon D3200 or 3100.
