School tech director and server upgrades

So one of the HDD's in our server at school went out and it was in a RAID 10. So she bought a new Seagate Constellation. Fairly good choice I thought. Then she bought a mATX msi motherboard and a 4770k. I didn't think that was a very good choice and she asked my opinion but I want gonna tell her to get a server board and maybe a Xeon since she had already placed the order. What do you think

should be fine tbh, what would you need a xeon for that a 4770K can't deliver?

It's just on 24/7 365 with 1000+ people on it and a Xeon is meant to take the 80* load temps more than a Xeon. She just uses the stock cooler

besides the 4770k not supporting ecc. they're practically the same. you actually get more performance from the 4770k than similarly priced xeons, so i see no real problems.

 

other than her buying a seagate :3

depends what the server is used for, if it is staff storage or a simple proxy server then a xeon is overkill.

File server for students and staff, also manages login through a local network (proxy?) and has a program (forgot name) that manages the packets and such for the three different Wi-Fi and the Ethernet.

Still should be fine, technically a Xeon and i7 of same spec will handle most operations the same, but still i agree the temps may be a problem. So she ordered the cpu already? Any way you can cancel and explain why a xeon would be better and lower the chance of failure?

We're in the middle of testing so she won't send it back.

file server and domain controller, I wouldn't worry about it.   If it fails then she can chalk it up to a learning experience.   The only issue is going to be how many students try to access files at once and how big they are.  300 word documents isn't going to bother it.

Although its a server there will not be that much traffic on the server at once.  Each PC will still boot from its own hard disk and the server will only be used for file transfers or opening documents etc.

No dude. He's a student, and she's the school tech director. She asked him his opinion on what to buy for the school. Probably because he's really good at computers.......
