Need Router, advice needed

Tech Lover

hi. im in search of a new router. i have been upgrading my stuff over the past few months with my savings ;)

now its the router's turn. im currently using a very old but still good enough for my use router, that is Asus RT-N10+.

P_500.jpg

↑ yes this thing lol :D

now here is my situation. my internet connection is DSL+ which is already shitty cause you know in DSL the upload is 1/4 that of download speeds. i have 8Mbps connection where my downloads are around 800Kbps and uploads are around 90Kbps. its crap.

i have given my WiFi to my brother who lives upstairs. he pays me half the bill and this way it helps me and him both. now he keeps on nagging all the time that he does not get proper signal of WiFi and that internet speed he gets is crap. here where i live, 8Mbps is very respectable speed cause of expensive internet. i can understand his concerns as well because this Asus router is 4 years old... lel :D

anyways, now, i need a router, any company, any brand which fulfill my following requirements:

  • must have signals that spread all over my house. my house has 2 portions, ground and 1st floor. there are 5 bedrooms each floor, 1 kitchen 1 guest/drawing room, 1 tv lounge and 5 bathrooms for each bedroom. yes i want wifi signals in bathroom, who doesn't? :P
  • MUST double MUST have the settings in VERY EASY manner which i can change where i can manage all the people on my network and i can assign them their maximum download and upload speeds. im not an expert what im trying to say is i can manage that he gets, say, maximum downloads of 500Kbps and upload of 50Kbps from my internet and thats it for him. he should not get more than that. this is because when ever he is at home, i cant play any online game with low pings. my ping go sky high when he is using my connection.
  • which ever company it is from, it should be long lasting because i dont want to upgrade for at least 2 years. it can be ac router no problem.
  • my BUDGET is US $ 110 to $130! in Canadian dollars it makes upto Canadian Dollars $150

i know its weird to ask like this, but LTT is my only trust worthy place and i love you guys for all the help this community offers.

thanks in advance.

This Asus can do pretty much what you required: http://www.mbreviews.com/asus-rt-n66u-dark-knight-router-review/and it is in the price range (about 130$ US).

It is dual-band (both 2.4 and 5GHz), supports QoS, has a very large coverage, the signal is stable, even through concrete walls (I have 2 in my home) and it has a stylish design. It is easy to configure and as for number of connections,

I have 2 smartphones, 2 laptops, 1 TV and a PS4 conected and never had any problems (though it does support a lot more connections).

I've got DSL as well, and sharing with a friend who is a floor below me and across the hall. Together, we have 4-5 smartphones, two desktops, 6-7 laptops, 2 printers, a Wii U, Xbox 360, a Chromecast, and a Blu-ray player all connected (usually a computer, laptop, all phones, and the Chromecast are connected at once) on my Netgear R7000 Nighthawk. We also have DSL and very similar speeds to you. I would highly recommend this router to anyone try to run a signal a fair distance. It actually comes close to covering my entire building. The only downside is the $200 price tag, and that it runs better with a custom DD-WRT firmware. I ended up getting it lightly used for $100, then put the firmware on it, and bam! I have great range and wonderful intranetworking capabilities. My only bottleneck is my Internet speeds.

The above mentioned router would be my first pick, unless you can get a Nighthawk for as cheap as I did :P Best of luck in the hunt!

i really had both of those routers in my list :)

my only main issue is will i be able to allocate specific download and upload speed for each client on my network? what i mean to say is, if i buy any of these two routers, can i set my own speed as maximum and my brother's download speed to say, 400Kbps and uploads to 50Kbps? will he only get that speed and no more? is such thing even possible? im a dummy so pls reply must!

thanks

I know I can with DD-WRT. For example, I have my chromecast set to the absolute highest priority, then my desktop, then my surface.

Hope that answers your question. You can use presets, or use manual speeds.
