How did my friend set this up?

flibberdipper

So my friend wanted me to have a look at his server that he has, so I did. And now I wanna make something similar. I'm 90% sure that it's an FTP server.

So, will some of the free NAS software out there (like OMV and NAS4Free) be able to do this, since they have FTP options? And besides electricity and data, does my friend have to pay for his URL?

Any FTP looks like this when accessed via a browser... Get a free domain name or get a DNS service to point to it and done :P

Fucktards is just the only way to describe people stupid enough to do something so pointless.

Have any ideas for where to get a free domain name?

Why not just get a dynamic dns from ddns or no-ip for free? Host it on your own PC and point the dns to your IP. Also make sure to set up your router properly, allow port 21 and DMZ to the local IP that the FTP is on. :)

Im setting up my public ftp this week anyway just get Fedora linux or something like that and run ftpd server on it, very easy or you can install webmin on fedora and get pro ftpd (all free)

As for domain name i pay 3.99 a year for my domain with godaddy lol.

I reccomend Fedora or RHEL or Centos they are easy to set up and can do anything.

You can check it out ftp://server.bartsch-communications.combut you will be prompted with a password.

I have an ftp but its password protected and looks like that

+1 for the correct and appropriate utilization of the word fucktards

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.

I stink in networking...  so, I suck at this.  But, it depends.  Is your friend using the server on a common port used by FTP?

If you can access his ftp with ftp://domain.comthe port will be 21 unless he has ip tables on his router.
