AMD R9 390X with 8 gigs of ram?

cluelessgenius

German TechSite "GameStar" wrote the reason for the new 300 series to only come out June instead of April is that they want to make sure the driver is perfect but also may be because they are planning to deliver them with 8 gigs of vram instead of 4.

http://www.gamestar.de/hardware/grafikkarten/amd-radeon-r9-390x/news-artikel/amd_radeon_r9_390x,889,3084057.html

Other sources claim that AMD only had one or two graphics cards to present in April and then chose to prefer to present the entire R-300 family at Computex. The expansion of the Radeon R9 390X 8 GB High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) instead allegedly previously planned 4 GB to have been a reason for the postponement. The Italian website bitandchips now claims to have spoken with senior staff at CeBIT graphics card manufacturers. This AMD partners have confirmed that the AMD Radeon R9 390X is long finished, which relates to the actual hardware.

what do you think is this true? if the 390x's vram is as kickass as they hype it to be im seriously getting goosebumps.

I just wish I had 4. 8 is probably overkill 99.99% of the time, 6GB would make more sense.

If they do, they'll probably releasing something with like 7.... .5 GB of VRAM

But still it will chop 390x to pieces.

Well it would make sense, especially if the card is powerful enough to use more than 4gb.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I would've thought that it would have 6GB of VRAM, but 8GB is nice too :D

Maybe this has to do with the new consoles having 8GB of memory that game devs can split any way they choose. On XBONE and PS4, game devs can split the 8 GB up between system and gpu, so perhaps this can help make console ports easier.

I wish they'd release a more budget card with HBM, if the rumors are true and the 390 is 700$ , while anything cheaper is a rebrand, then what's the point

Yea, and when the R9 390X drops, poor drivers will drop its actual performance by half.

HAHAHAHA SEE WHAT I DID THERE????

These jokes are cancer.

If the 380x matches the 970 in peformance and price, and has 8gb of Vram, I'm gonna be pissed.

Essentially a 290X with updated architecture (Tonga GCN 1.2) with either 2816 or 3072 shaders and you're gonna be pissed if it beats the 970? It's practically a foregone conclusion.

He's upset because he thinks his GTX 970 only has 3.5GB of VRAM, when the 380X might offer more.

I'd rather wait for a lineup when the DX12 spec is complete/no longer changing, so that we can get cards that support all features from it. DX12 is really promising, so it would be a shame to get a new card only to see that not all of its features are supported due to changes in the spec.
