GTA V ram issues/how to solve and a question

Hey guys whatsup..
Sooo, like everyone else i was really excited about GTA V launch on pc and when it came online i dove right into it

but soon after the first mission i had some issues with the game, crashes, minimizing the game telling my computer was low on memory, error, note that the pc never froze.. but it was really hard to pass the 1st tutorial mission on the game cause it would not load! (i terminated almost all processes and everything i possibly could terminate, i even disabled windows aero -.-)

My specs are:
I5@2500k

z-something mobo, can't remember

gtx 970

250gb samsung ssd

and finally 8GB 1333mhz ram

which is the recommended quantity of ram for the game, which i think is right if you think about it, the game literally uses 8gb of ram to run lol

I was desperate and even began to look for prices of ram, while trying to find a way around it and then i found it.

On our computer in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System -> Advanced system settings -> Advanced -> under Performance -> settings -> Advanced

there is a little thing called virtual memory which is a part of a HDD/SSD space used by windows as if it were ram, then i set it to 4096MB maximum and i can run gtaV normally.

So here comes my first question:
How slower would it be (using an SSD) to have like 4GB 1333Mhz ram, and like 8GB virtual ram memory, how does it affect performance, why would i pay 400$ on a 2x8gb stick of 1600mhz ram if i could use my ssd as ram?
I know you cannot compare a onboard videocard with an offboard one, but i don't seem to recall RAM ever beign a factor, a bottleneck to a pc

and the second question: is if anyone else had this problem with gtaV?

Since when does 16gb of ram cost > 200 ? Especially 1600mhz!

+ Try to close some background programs. Eg Chrome and other Bloatware.

Hey guys whatsup..

I'm not sure to be honest, but I think if it was simple and/or doable a lot of people would be doing it already.

Don't use your ssd as virtual ram. there is an order of magnitude or 2 difference in the speed ram vs the speed of an SSD. also 400 for ram?!?

Heck, even 16GB DDR3-2400 is rather affordable now.  I was able to get a kit for like...  $120, and yes it was Corsair Vengeance Pro...not G.Skill.

I know you cannot compare a onboard videocard with an offboard one, but i don't seem to recall RAM ever beign a factor, a bottleneck to a pc

Also ram was a bottleneck for ages before 4 and 8GB became standard issue in most prebuilts.  Back when most pc's shipped with 1GB and vista was new ram bottle necks where rampant.

that being said your pagefile (the virtual memory) is not ram and many programs will not treat it as ram. Windows will try to push what will be allowed into virtual memory but some things just wont run from there. Also if you are using your pagefile a lot on the same drive your files are an you will notice a massive slowdown in your computer responsiveness due to limitations of your ssd or ssds interface.

ask anyone who was running a low spec machine when vista was new. large page-files ARE NOT a replacement for ram.

I don't trust that that error isn't a glitch or bug. If you were actually low on memory, the game would be swapping back and forth to your page file more often and cause some stuttering/hitching, but I see no reason why it wouldn't continue to run. I guarantee 8 GB of system RAM and 4 GB of VRAM is more than enough for the game.

I have 12GB of ram and when it hits 8GB it closes the game..

Can u not

A quick google shows a possible temp fix. There where a couple of commenters who said this also worked for them.

For anyone seeing the "out of memory" error - are you running your OS without any virtual memory allocated?

If so, allocate some and hey presto - no more memory related crashes!

Weird thing is I'm running 8GB of ram & my total system memory usage is around 4GB when the game is in full flow so there's no reason I should be seeing "out of memory" warnings from windows as it forces GTA V to close.

I'm running an SSD as my system drive so I'd turned off virtual memory completely to avoid unnecessary writes.

For some reason GTA V does not play nice without virtual memory enabled

I allocated a couple of gig for virtual memory on my secondary/mechanical drive and hey presto - no more "out of memory" errors despite the fact that total memory usage still never gets much above 4GB!

Despite these initial bugs, this port is so much better than GTA 4!!! Big thanks to for the PC love!!

Hopefully this works :)

Didn't think I would need it anymore since 12GB of RAM :P

also there was a quote near the end of the thread with a guy who disabled the virtual memory on his ssd (implying that it was on in the first place) and moved it to his mechanical drive to fix the issue.

See what your desktop RAM usage is while not doing anything. When I run the game it uses up around 6/16GB of my RAM

Normally windows auto-closes an application if the total ram usage of the pc > 80% (or atleast that's how I observed it on my pc)

My laptop uses total 6GB memory when i play GTA V but my desktop at home uses 9GB. My laptop has 8GB and my desktop 16GB
Go to start, rightclick on Computer/mycomputer/thispc and go to properties, then u go to advanced. Performance settings, advanced. Click CHANGE. remove the automatic checkbox so the custom size will enable. And put Initial Size 4000 and Maximum 6000 then press SET(important) then press OK, APPLY and OK and it will ask u to restart your pc. After restart open your game and play. Let me know if it works for you

On the topic of ram speed vs ssd paging file speed.

If I'm not mistaken ram has a bandwidth of about 21GBs, ssds have about 600-800MBs.
