Beyerdynamic Dt770 Pro review

The DT 770 Pros from Beyerdynamic are a great set of cans. Like most people I was nervous about the price point. So, the question is, are theses headphones worth your hard earned credits?

The DT 770 Pros fit my head well, very comfortable even with 7+ hours of use with little and often no break. Even with my thin framed glasses. The velour pads are very enjoyable and remain that way with extended use. They don’t make the side of my head sweaty, always nice.. So nice that if you buy these I would recommend keeping them on… I know some people like to replace them right away, but I would try them for a while.

The headband is made of metal but has a buttoned on leather type “sleeve.” It’s comfy and replaceable if it ever wears down. The headband doesn’t give me any hot-spots no matter how long I wear them.

The cable is a standard although I have seen models with a coiled cable. Something that you should be able to find. The cable is 9.8 ft (2.98 meters) long which is plenty long enough for anything I do, or could use these for. The cable is non removable and terminates at a 3.5mm jack with a ¼ adapter.  Speaking of the adapter, with the DT 770s you get a nylon bag and the adapter is included.

These headphones come in a 32, 80 or 250 ohm edition, I opted for 80 at a comfortable middle. The rest of the specs are as follows:

  • They weigh 270 grams

  • Have a nominal sound pressure of 96 decibels

  • A frequency response of 5 to 35 Hertz

  • Are closed back. (If you want open back you should go for the DT 880s or DT 990s)

So, how do they sound? To sum it up in one word, excellent. Compared to the Audio Technica atx m50x I would go with the DT 770s everyday. I don’t have a definitive test of soundstage and such, but I would say they sound great for blues, rock, heavy metal, electronic, basicly everything. I find the deeps pleasant, but not overpowering… so maybe bass junkies should look elsewhere. The highs are crisp, without going overboard. The mids also sound great.

So, my opinion is quite clear. I love this set of headphones and would highly recommend them. If you’re on the fence, I hope this review is enough to convince you to try them….you won’t be disappointed.

Nice impression, and any impression/review that says the DT770 is a better option compared to the M50X is alright by me. ;)  BTW, you'd said the the DT880 is the open back option of the DT770, I think you'd left out the DT990 as another viable open back option from Beyerdynamic. I have the DT990/600 myself, it's one smokin' can.... :D

Nice review, it's certainly made these even more tempting, I'm just not sure whether to get these or the dt990s. How wide is the soundstage on these like both compared to the M50X and for gaming?

990 Master race. Mainly for the open back design.

What do they know of England, who only England know?

I'm not the massive audio "expert", but I find the soundstage very satisfying. After listing to both the M50Xs and the dt 770s I find the soundstage on the 770s more satisfying and definitely wider... but as I said in the review I don't really have a definitive test... I used things like naturespace and virtual barbershop to measure it... As for the dt990s it just depends on if you want open backed or closed back.

Nice Review! I own the same set myself (but the 250ohm) and use a Schiit Bifrost (with the Uber mod) and Lyr amp. With well mastered music and a glass of whisky in a dimly lit room late at night is something that can only be described as something very special and intimate indeed.

I would classify the headphone's characteristics as very balanced, but when using the amp, (since it does have a tube input stage) there is a bit of warmth in the mid frequency range. That may anger some true purists, but it's a fantastic match for my listening tastes.

I actually picked up on pair of these on /r/hardwareswap that just arrived today! Before hand, I was using a pair of Takstar Pro 80s (basically the HyperX Cloud's OEM for the headphones, they're now at my school office), which were great, but these are far more comfortable.

I'm relatively new the audio game myself, so the natural next step I guess is to choose an amp/DAC to really bring out the potential of these!

OP, what are you using to drive your pair?

As I mentioned in the review, I have the 80ohm version so you don't have to buy an expensive amp and dac (or combo). I have an asus xonar DG, it has an amp/dac on it and drives them just fine... Although, the ASRock Z97 Extreme6 has an amp built in... so either on software or the BIOS you should be able to turn the amp on, then select the correct ohm level of your headphones.

I've haven't had any issues driving the amp on my motherboard, though I haven't seen any software/BIOS solutions to modify settings. Just curious what you were using :P

Ah, ok. I don't know exactly how ASRock does their amp settings (even though I use one), they might just be setup from factory.....

Or, louder. That setting just controls the gain.

I had these cans since 2008 and the pads need replacing so I bought a pair of Gemini HSR 1000 on the off chance for something more comfortable for my ears.

I prefer something more DEEP than the DT770's were offering because my ears would start to hurt after about 2-3 hours.

So I get these $43 headphones and compare them to the DT 770's. I start thinking some weird thoughts. Like....why aren't these more money?

Why did I pay so much for the Beyerdynamics. Lots of things going thru my head.

Clarity is better, soundstage is better.... Bass, mid bass.... everything sounds better... how, why?

I kept going thru sounds that I've heard over and over again....back and forth between each set of headphones including the Senn HD280 pro.

The cheapest pair of headphones I've owned in 12 years or so wins..... Go figure.

Not to mention they are lighter and can implement the Brainwave HM5 pads.

DT 770's going up for sale.... that's for sure.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Also, thank you for the info on the dt990, thank goodness for edit, right?  :P

You're most welcome! The one negative aspect about Beyerdynamic cans is the non-detachable cables. But that's a non-issue if you can find someone to mod it or better yet, mod it yourself. I'd intoduced a guy, who has a Beyerdynamic T5p, but he wanted detachable cables, to the guy who did the cables for my Sennheiser HD700 and AKG K812. This was the end result, the T5p modded with Audeze connectors at the request of the T5p owner. I must say, this hobbyist/modder did a bang up job with the mod.....

I'll be getting him to mod my Denon D2000 and D7000 with detachable cables, similar to those on my HD700.....

That looks so good. The guy who did the mod deserves a lot of credit.

I have done similar mods in the past (mostly on ATH-M50s), but it looked nowhere near as good.

It is a major complaint, that Beyerdynamic doesn't offer removable cables.

You can change the cable yourself, but it does require you to take the left earcup apart and solder in the new wire.

For example, I have changed the straight cable on my DT990 Premiums to the curled cable from the Pro version.

Sorry about the messy desk, and the gorilla picture quality

You can also order them with a curled cabel directly from Beyerdynamic, but where is the fun in that?

@OP

It a really well written impression/review of the DT770s.

I have used a pair since 2009, and I really like them.

However, I always found the bass to be a bit on the ´softer´ side. They don't really offer a precise  and punchy bass, that I personally like.

They are still my main choice for LAN parties, since they pretty much block all sounds around them.

You can turn the amp OFF in your BIOS? How does that work?

Yeah...

"Although the asrock ygufihxhoxh has an amp built in to"

All motherboard have amps...

Otherwise you wouldn't hear it

I tried so many different headphones, from sennheiser, audio technica, shure and a few others and the Dt 770s feel the best and sound the best to me... But, if you have a pair of headphones that you really like that are different from the ones I do well... I'm just glad you have a pair of headphones you like!

Nice mod. I was thinking of doing something like that to mine, but realized the clumsy person I am, I would ruin everything  :P I can see the bass being to soft for a decent amount of people, but I like it the way it is, I don't like really heavy bass and the DTs give the right amount for me.
