Bloodborne how the hell do you regenerate health

I've been playing Bloodborne for about 2 hours and I keep getting killed because of a single mistake made during combat. Is there anyway I can heal myself? I have 20 blood vials but I honestly have no idea what they do.

I don't have the game, but I know blood vials heal you.

Press triangle to use them, they heal you.

 

You can also upgrade your stats to increase how much health you have.

Yeah I didn't even know how to use them so I couldn't try. I just looked it up and It's Triangle button lel.

I honestly do not know to be honest haha. That's usually my first instinct but I think I was too consumed by the rage.
