1 more 970 or wait for 3xx Series?

Hey everyone!

 

 

Currently I have a MSI GTX 970. I was thinking about getting another 970 for SLI, or should I wait for the AMD 300 series?

 

Usually I stay with Nvidia, but I'm not a fanboy of either. I enjoy things from both AMD and Nvidia. 

 

What do you guys think? 1 more 970 or wait for 300 series/Nvidias new cards?

If you can wait then wait and see how well the 300 seriese will actualy perfrom.

^ Buy another when the 3** cards are released.  No point selling one card just to buy another similarly specced card.

I most likely wouldn't sell it. I'd keep it around. I think I might check out the specs, and even if they aren't great, the 970 may go down!

Why do you need another one? What's your monitor?

Nvidia will drop prices like a nuke if they have tuff competition.

what I always say, if you wait you will never have what you want.  There is always something just around the corner and no matter when you buy or what you buy it will be cheaper a few weeks later regardless.  So buy now and enjoy it or keep waiting forever.

Nvidia will drop prices like a nuke if they have tuff competition.

 

I don't see it with the 970 at least. It's already selling at a pretty low price for what it offers and if $250 R9 290s from October-March couldn't make it budge I'm not seeing where rebranded R9 290s sold as R9 380s will either. I'd be really surprised if AMD just retires their 290 and 290x.

Currently I have a MSI GTX 970. I was thinking about getting another 970 for SLI, or should I wait for the AMD 300 series?

 

Usually I stay with Nvidia, but I'm not a fanboy of either. I enjoy things from both AMD and Nvidia. 

 

What do you guys think? 1 more 970 or wait for 300 series/Nvidias new cards?

 

Based on your monitor from your pcpartpicker link being 1080p 60 Hz I'd say neither option makes much sense, since a single 970 crushes 1080p60.

To the OP: get another 970 if you're set on spending more money. You don't necessarily need it, but it's a better option than getting a 300 series card. Unless you only want a 3XX card because it's the latest and greatest thing. Then hey, it's your money, go nuts lol.

But not the 380(x)? That'd be like nvidia only using Maxwell for the 980/Titan X and then using Kepler for the 970/960.

When the 290 and 290x came out they rebranded their flagship 7970 as the R9 280x and their next in line 7950 as the R9 280. I'd be floored to see them release an entirely new line of GPUs in the 300 series.

floored as you may be, it wouldn't be completely out there for them to do it. I think this will be along the same lines as their APUs where they will take the idea and run with it, releasing an entire line using the new HBM.

There are conflicting rumors floating around the web, but from what I understand only 390(x) will use new HBM technology. 380(x) will have GDDR5 but new architecture(?) and the rest of the line up should be rebrands with small clocks and tdp improvements. Once again it's all supposed leaks and rumors.

And to the op. If you have a 1080p monitor, stay with a single 970 and wait to see what future brings.

Yes...from what I've seen as well...only the new flagship will use the HMB ram. There hasn't been any 380/380x specs as of yet. For whatever reason they are only releasing the big boy as of...well...whenever they release it. LOL. I was surprised a well they weren't upgrading the 290X with HMB as well but maybe it's not so simple.

I disagree.  There is a balancing act to purchasing electronics.  Waiting a few weeks for a reasonable price drop is smart.  Beyond that, you might have a point.

fair enough, it might be different in different countries too, in Australia the price always seems to drop right after buying (might just be my bad luck), thus there is no good time to buy because you will be perpetually waiting.

 

Maybe if we have a solid date on the release of the 3XX series it might change things a little, but even then you'd need a crystal ball to know if the card you want is actually going to be the better buy (dollar wise), we could be waiting for weeks to find out the best time to buy was actually right now.
