Laptop cooling

waggythegeek

So, just opened up my laptop for first time, and found that two screws that hold heatsink to GPU were missing. Also, no thermal paste. Dat normal, or did Lenovo give me a poorly assembled laptop?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

I opened quite a few laptops and all had all the screws and combination of thermal paste and termal pads.

Did you buy it used? If not, I'd contact Lenovo. Modern GPUs will use thermal paste, and deffinatly not be missing screws...

nope! brand freakin new. I was all out ragemode when I found out, wanted to make sure I wasn't being naïve... It is a couple of years old at this point, and I bought it at Costco,  do you think Lenovo will still do something about it?

Dunno about Lenovo. But I've heard (and I am not from US) that Costco take back almost anything, so at least get your money back ?

Also, could I fix it with some thermal paste and some screws?

You, sir, win. Where can I get 2x5m screws? That's the type I need.
