stuck between noctua nh-d15 and be quite dark rock pro 3

I am building a computer for my dad (He's paying) and I have picked the AMD FX 6300 for the CPU (That in junction with a GTX 960 gaming from MSI in a corsair r200).

One will the CPU be good enough considering it's like 3 years old and for cooling I have decided between the Be Quite Dark Rock Pro 3 or the Noctua NH-D15.

Will these be good enough to handle this CPU overclocked and which one should I get.

I am also considering on upgrading my corsair h75 in my other computer and thought I could have one of these. But I don't know if my case (Corsair Carbide Air 240) is big enough to fit these. I had a look and the site says max height 120 mm but they also said max GFX card length is 290 mm.

Things he does:

-Photoshop

-Word processing

-RPG,Strategy and recently wants to get into new genres, I suggested the Talos Principle

-Anti-virus

-Web browsing

He tends not to shut down other programs when he play's games so I thought the extra threads/cores would be of benefit.

Aesthetic: go with bequiet

Performance: go with either, but the Noctua will be slightly better.

Installation ease: Noctua, hands down.

The projects never end in my line of work.

i'm torn between recommending intel or sticking with AMD, so i guess i'll not nag on AMD's single core performance too much here.

i personally have a dark rock 3 (which is about half of the pro in terms of surface area) and that suffices for an i7 4790K even with fans on minimum.

i'm gonna say dark rock pro 3, because even for a closed case fanboy like me, the noctua is rather hideous.

EDIT: i should mention, i'm quite skilled with fiddly computer builds, but the dark rock 3 cost me half an hour to mount.

Noctua - slightly better cooling, slightly louder, looks bad, easy to mount.

be quiet! - slightly worse cooling, slighly more silent, looks awesome, nightmare to mount.

(I have Dark Rock Pro 2 and that thing is barely audible when my CPU is on full load).

Thanks.

My dad is not keen on spending near £900 so I am trying avoid AIO's for this reason. I might try out the Noctua then. My dad's case doesn't have a side window so looks to him don't matter that much and I have very tubby fingers.

Would any of them fit in a corsair carbide air 240?

Neither fits in the case and I wouldn't recommend spending so much money on the cpu cooler rather than the cpu in the first place.

I'd suggest allocating the budget better and planning the system as a whole in the New Builds and Planning subforum instead.

Thanks for the heads up. I have asked him about his budget but he doesn't seem to have any idea of what it should be. So I am working on guess work.  I picked the cooler because the build incorporates an AMD CPU which tend to run hotter and every time I try to use an Intel based system the cost goes up by £100. I checked out the link that was in your post and I follow pretty much all that was suggested to the letter.

I have a corsair h75 cpu cooler in my rig cooling a AMD athlon x4 860k and I was looking to upgrade it as I tend to get temperature spikes above 80 deg C what would be a good replacement?

Could you send a link to the new builds and planning sub forums please?

The H75 should have no issue with cooling the 860k. Are you oc'ing it with a high core voltage or did you mount it incorrectly?

The New Builds and Planning subforum is on the front page of the LTT.com forum--just scroll down. Be sure to read the sticky at the top of the section before posting--the link is also in my sig.

Well with the h75 I get idles about 45 deg c and load anything from 67-77 deg c and some spikes above 80 deg c. This is without an OC and I have at least tried remounting it 3 time taking care not to let air pockets in. I am currently away from my desktop so I can't try to remount it yet but I will give it another shot. What sort of temps should I be seeing?

You should definitely be seeing lower temps. How's the case airflow set up?

Mostly aiming for postive. 2 SP120 mm fans at the buttom as intakes, 2 at the front as intakes and two at the top running as exhausts one AF 120 and the radiator in push-pull with SP120 performance edition.

That seems pretty off. I'd suggest trying to remount it if you haven't already. As for air bubbles, that shouldn't be an issue as long as the cooler is properly mounted.

Well I treid remounting the block and nothing changed. I did some research and it seems that the CPU has a different way of monitering temps. Turns out AMD use temperature margins. As a result programs like HWMonitor and such have errors in measuring temps. Maybe this is the cause.

People say the Noctua stuff looks ugly.  I see Noctua in a case and I think "Quality".  People that want the absolute best in their case don't care what it looks like.  Go with Noctua and win.

Regarding the installation of the BeQuiet, it's easy enough if you do it the correct way. That is : screw both nuts onto the cooler's bracket first, then put it with the contact area upwards, put the motherboard on top, put on the backplate and tighten the screws. Took me all of 5 minutes on my first attempt that way. If you start from the back of the motherboard and work your way to the front, you'll be messing with that spanner indeed and it'll be a tedious job.

my experiences with noctua are really nice, their mounting system is the easiest i've ever used, taking everything out of the package is more work than installing the cooler itself! i'd go with noctua every time (if the budget allows it of course)

The first post (I think) literally says everything you need to know. Ignore everyone else.

"Noctua for performance,

Be quiet for looks. Either one works,

But the noctua is slightly better."

Paraphrasing here.
