What PSU?

TheCaptain53

Hey guys,

A couple of months ago I built my first gaming rig. Falling for the significant performance and capability increase over even current-gen consoles, I'm now wanting to upgrade my PC even further (specifically a new graphics card).

My PC consists of an AMD FX-6300 and a Zotac GTX 960 (don't even say it).

I'm not sure what the power supply in this is as I was given the tower and PSU by a friend for free, it hasn't melted on me yet, and doesn't seem to have caught fire under even the heaviest of loads.

What PSU would you recommend for my current setup and (possible) future expansions (thinking GTX 960 Ti or 970)?

And I don't mind spending a little bit more for rigid quality and high efficiency.

Thanks

A decent 550W power supply would do you fine.

I use an XFX TS-550 in my system. It's quiet, efficient and reliable (touch wood!).

If I decide to go SLI or get an AMD card (trollllll), what PSU should I get for a little bit more growing room? Is a 750W too much?

For two way SLI or Xfire a 650w would be ideal or 700w for some AMD cards.

You can never have to much power in you're PSU. (off course you can go overkill and buy a 1500w psu, throwing money away like a champ)

It just means that the psu has less to do under higher load. So less heat, noise and a longer lifespan.

I would go for a 600-650w PSU for one GPU and a 800W or 800+ W PSU for SLI

I myself bought a 700 w (might be 750 I forgot.) But I bought it so I could expand. It's a nice PSU and it's been going strong in a 24/7 situation. Thing is, (don't yell at me). It's an apevia brand one. I've seen good and bad things thrown at these supplies, but mine is working fine, powering an A-10 6800k 4.4 turbo clocked APU with a 1.4 GHz turboed gtx 970 acx 2 sc. If I had 100 dollars, I'd get a corsair awesome decked out PSU.

The Corsair CS650M seems like a solid enough power supply.

Anyone recommend something else?

He needs something that can support SLI/Xfire.

I didn't see the bit about SLI/CF. In that case the 750W version or the EVGA G2 750W.

Having said that He would also need a better cpu as the FX-6300 won't be much good with 2 x GTX 970's.

The 550W XFX XTR will easily support two 960s in SLI (not that 960 SLI is a good idea in the first place) or upgrading to a single high-powered card, even along the lines of a 290X/390X.

@TheCaptain53 if you do plan on having two high power draw cards in SLI/CF in the future though, consider the EVGA 750B2. https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-110b20750vr

I like this for single card setups: Seasonic OEM, and a great review from JohnnyGURU.
