Tiko starts Kickstarter for $179 Unibody 3D printer

Henry

EDIT: NO THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS POST

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tiko3d/tiko-the-unibody-3d-printer

How did they save on costs?

Specially designed, passive cooled liquefier
Unibody design

Custom electronics

etc.

It has no ports whatsoever, you can print wirelessly. Personally, I'd prefer using SD card.

Did I mention this uses non-proprietary filament? Oh and 138.3 cubic in print volume. Pretty darn nice for only $179. Oh yeah and it's enclosed :)

Btw this was also demoed at SXSW 2015.

Folding for LTT since April 2016.

Loving the price. Sub 200$ for a 3d printer? Yes please!

I don't like the wireless thing though. Would prefer to have a wired/USB transfer.

As someone who hasnt used a 3d printer before, why is the wireless bad/not as good as wired?

Hopefully it turns out great... but they way I'm reading it, they cut every single corner possible found a way to justify it. And saying that Delta printers don't need high tolerances...?

Same reason everywhere else, its not as reliable.

Same reason everywhere else, its not as reliable.

Do they need to stay in contact with the pc all the time? or do they just pass the file over once and the printer runs it all?

I guess i just dont see why a stable connection would be required.

No internet? Too bad no printing.

I actually haven't used one either. But I prefer wired because IMO it's a bit more reliable.

It shouldn't need to be in contact at all times, but I'm not sure how this particular one works. They do, however, need to be awake to receive signal at all times, and that is where I've had issues with wireless... typically takes a reboot for my normal printer to print.

"No Wi-Fi? Tiko makes its own wireless access point so you can print directly, too."

Don't need internet, router, anything. Just a computer or smartphone with wireless capabilities.

$300 is more than $179...

The $300 one also has about three times the print volume, and is a proven platform with tons of options for upgrades, and is easy to fix. I've also read tons of horror stories on Kossel (a delta style) printers, about how they are amazing while they work, but extremely hard to troubleshoot and fix when they break (and they will).

Then again, you also have to factor in the Prusa i3 would have to be assembled, but if you don't have the skills to build one (its extremely simple) you probably aren't the kind of person who would be 3D printing things.

And?

Try to use that fucking thing on your neck. If you have bussiness and maybe an investor to back you up so you can lower your price or maybe you have lesser price when buying certain parts as bussiness , because of large volume of order.  Just think, there is many ways how to get something for less when you do bussiness.
