I've got the MSI model of the 270x. It's quite good, i have OC'd it, and have a low speed fan profile, never goes above 30% speed, core temp peaks at 56c

Yeah, no point in getting X-item special edition, when X+1-item costs the same.
In this case r9 270x vs r9 280

The limiting factor in R9 270x overclocking is NOT a thermal limit.

It makes no difference which R9 270x you buy, except for binning (but I'm not aware of any high-binned R9 270x version since it's not a high-end card)

 

Buy the cheapest R9 270x you can and play the silicone lottery, because that's the only thing that matters with the card.

 

For $180, you're hitting R9 280 territory, which is probably what you should go for.

Buy it used, and you could probably get two, or something better like a 7970/R9 280X.

That or an R9 280 would be a better bet. Go for it if you can.

 

Just so you know, GTX 960 and R9 280 tend to perform about as well as each other, with the R9 280 pulling ahead at the cost of higher power consumption and usually higher temps. However, it's still good.

Unless there's some ridiculous sale going on with a GTX 960, the R9 280 is cheaper and better in some games that use the extra VRAM, and only a tiny bit worse in others, and the R9 280x is better period and the extra 1GB of VRAM will matter more down the road. Basically I don't see a reason to buy the GTX 960 unless you absolutely need an NVidia specific card because you own something like an NVidia Shield.
