Don't get why everyone says if there is a 980Ti that it can't be as fast as or faster than the Titan X. It sure can be. The difference is the Titan is not meant to be a gaming card even though Nvidia markets it as a GeForce card.

 

The 780Ti is faster than the original Titan which are both based on the same chip, and the 780Ti was priced lower than the Titan. They could very well do the same thing with 980Ti and Titan X.

 

That is... if they actually are going to make a 980Ti which should be regarded with high speculation at this point.

 

 

Also, "Ti" is a name. Nothing more. All it means is that it's faster than the non-Ti variant. That's it. It does not dictate or determine which chip it uses. ;)

The only issue I see with it being "faster" than a Titan X, would be the Titan X already has the full GM200 chip.

So unless they made a new chip, or gave it a massive factory OC, I don't see that happening.

I think it'll be a slightly lower clocked Titan X, with 6gb of VRAM, but it won't be released until AMD releases their items.

 

Then depending on how the 3xx series stacks up against it, they could release it with a big factory OC, or a slight decrease in clocks

I don't think it would be faster, necessarily.  Was only addressing the fact that some people were claiming it wouldn't or couldn't be as fast as, or faster than the Titan X simply because the Titan X is supposed to be "the fastest" - which isn't necessarily true either.  The original Titan was not the fastest GPU in terms of gaming for the 700 series cards. The 780Ti was (albeit not by much). I can see some 3rd party variants having higher factory clocks and being a tad faster than the Titan X, if they go ahead with this. Again, it's all speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait and see.

I think if Nvidia did release a full GM200 based 6GB 980Ti that it would be a good move for them. It wouldn't undercut the Titan X because it's not a gaming card and those who actually need that card for what it is will still buy it. IMO it could be a very similar situation as we saw with the original Titan and 780Ti.

A better comparison would be the Titan Black & 780 TI, since the original Titan was still a cut down chip.

 

Also AFAIK the Titan X doesn't have double floating point and a lot of the things that usually comes with the Titan name.

Yeah, it's a little different this time around. The Titan X seems to be less of a workstation/compute GPU and more of a gaming GPU this time.

There won't be a GTX980Ti !!!!
People on here should know that Nvidia always releases a new series each year so it will be a GTX1080/GTX1080 ti.(Or what ever they call it)
They are literally doing the exact same thing as they did with Kepler.
