AKG K553 Pro Studio Headphone

Poohy14

Right now I am debating on if I should buy the AKG K553 Pro Studio Headphone on Massdrop right now. I have no idea if there are better options out there for the same price or even a little less. I want to see if someone can shed some light and too see if I should buy these or not. Only have $140 and no more than that. Are there other options I should look into? or just pull the plug and buy these? Help me decide on these, I am current using Logitech G430 headset and they recently just broke last week so I have been using my Harman/Kardon AE in-ear monitors for the time being as well. Like I said, I cannot go over the $140 USD limit at all. Help me out Knights of LTT. Should have said I do Like my bass but don't want it to be overwhelming over the mids and highs so you can't hear anything.

Edit: Was also looking at the Philips L1/28 Fidelio but didn't know if those were good or not.

Do you absolutely need closed back? Because otherwise second hand AKG K612 might be a better option

I am open to what ever headphones there is, prefer not buying someones used headphones since it makes me feel kinda gross wearing it so prefer buying new.

Massdrop exclusives like this one, dealing with AKG in particular, tend to be a good investment.  These headphones have been well reviewed and if I didn't already own two pair of open backed AKG (and a pair of ATH-M50), I'd be jumping on these myself.  Hell, I still might!  But what I mean by investment is that if you take them and take good care of them you are likely going to be able to easily recoup your investment should you decide to sell them later... maybe even make a profit, depending on how soon Amazon, et al, starts to carry the 553 and how much they are selling for.

The K551 is $259 on Amazon right now, if that gives you a clue.  http://www.amazon.com/AKG-K551SLV-Closed-Back-Reference-Class-Microphone/dp/B009KOTNA0

This is a good deal too right now, if you can use some decent speakers with your headphones:

I'd vote for the Philips, due to being cheaper and it will ship sooner.

Not worried about shipping but can you tell me why you will choose the Philips over the AKG not given the price difference??

Personal preference, haven't tried either. If you want them so bad, why even ask us?

I think you missed the point of this. I wanted to see what would be a better buy or another choice that is better than the headphones I chose for cheaper or for the same price. I wanted experiences with headphones, facts, ect.. so I can make a better educated buy on these since it will be an expensive buy for me.

Well then, neither of these headphones are something we tend to recommend. Grab a Kingston HyperX Cloud since you said you like bass.

Massdrop just cut the price down to $119 (once 1000 have joined) and have extended the drop to April 5th!   I'm having a very hard time NOT buying these right now....

How is the bass on them?? are they over whelming or are they just right so it is clear sounding and not covering the other audio like Beats??

Cheaper??

K550 - $188.00 new

K553 - $139.99 new, bout to be $120 soon

Think the K550 isn't cheaper right now, I only want a new pair of headphones, not used, grosses me out having used.

I am leaning hardcore to the K553 since it will be $120 soon and will be better quality than a lot other things in that price point unless I am mistaken.

Oh sorry well they are cheaper in the uk.

Actually about the same price as they are here in the states.  140 GBP for the 550 = 207 US.  The 553 at 119 US is just a bit over 80 GBP.

I was using Amazon to quote those prices.  Where can you find them for £99 in the uk?  Might be nice to have a link for future reference.

Regardless, I think the massdrop deal is a USA only exclusive, unless you use a forwarding service (I could be wrong though).
