Microsoft has unleashed project spartan preview, avalible with a new windows 10 build (10049)

AlexGoesHigh

after lots of waiting microsoft has finally unleashed to the masses project spartan and its avalible right now via windows update on windows 10, the update will change the build 10049, spartan is the only new feature added vs 10041

here's a sumary of what is on spartan right now

Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, is included with features like contextually aware suggestions, and assistance for weather or stocks information. While Cortana is present, calendar and flight information won’t be available as part of today’s preview, and the digital assistant is limited to the US for now in Project Spartan Similarly

Reading View mode is available in the Spartan preview, but roaming across devices and saving offline aren’t available just yet. Both features are planned for the final version of Windows 10 and Project Spartan which will ship in the summer.

One of Spartan’s more impressive features is the ability to annotate notes with a pen. While recently leaked builds of Spartan didn’t feature this, today’s preview will include this new Web Notes function. You can write or type directly on to a webpage, and share the comments through email, social networks, or through OneDrive. Microsoft even supports OneNote too, for easy clipping of web pages and inking comments or notes on them.

there are still some features that need to be implemented, most notably extension support, that should be coming later

also if your running visual studio 2015 you shouldn't upgrade yet, there are some bugs that malfunction with the IDE, specifically with the tools to create universal apps, you can read more about this here

FINALLY, this is one of the thing i was waiting to try for a while now, time to fire up the VM again :D

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

Again, bet it still won't auto update, and non-windows 10 users won't get it automatically

...
You fucktards are also the ones holding back internet standards. I'm ok with Internet explorer as a web developer-if it's the latest version.
But you won't stop making IE some feature exclusive to certain versions of windows, as if people actually upgrade for that, nor will you make it auto updating. So I'm stuck supporting Ie8 from five fucking years ago. If chrome or firefox support some new ccs thing or something, I can use it immediately because the browser auto-updates for all users.
For IE, the support may be lacking, but it gets there eventually. That would be fine, IF I DIDN'T HAVE TO WAIT FIVE FUCKING YEARS FOR THE CURRENT VERSION OF IE TO BE THE OLDEST ONE IN USE!
Seriously Microsoft, as a both a gamer and a web developer-
Fuck you. With all of my heart.

@Syntaxvgm, Windows 10 is a free upgrade. So many people will get Spartan. And it is not like Google and Mozilla are innocent either. They both have features that the other doesn't support. Live with it.

Awesome. I guess ill try it either when I get home or tomorrow. I'd like to just see it in action to know if ill like it. If it's good with the features I like and has extensions then it may be my default when w10 rolls out.

no, I cant. Because if ANY significant part of the audience is still on IE, then I will have to cater to it. I'm still making shit for IE8

Currently running the build. :) Hard to get a good idea of performance though since I'm a little turnt up on Alberta Premium whisky and I'm running in a VM.

So happy its here though. :)

Edit: One bug I've noticed is that Spartan is stuck in "Always on top" mode.

Edit: Two more bugs. When the Favourites bar is displayed, it cuts off the sites listed halfway vertically, they appear to be visually offset. #2, when you right-click the title bar area (not a tab) the context menu that appears does so at the very top of the Windows desktop and not where the click took place.

Edit: One more, hovering over a link does not display the actual URL behind the hyperlink text anywhere. The best you get is a tooltip saying "External link".

Edit once more: You cannot right-click an item on the favourites bar and get a context menu with options. That needs to be addressed. Also the note taking capability is currently not available.

And yes @GoodBytes I did submit that feedback in the browser feedback button. :P

I'm still making stuff for IE5.5. 8 isn't particularly hard to code for. CSS 3 still isn't properly standardized that I'm aware, though haven't checked this year so far.

Way to miss the point of his rant. He is saying that Microsoft makes their browsers exclusive to specific OSes. That is a terrible idea which holds progress back and Google/Mozilla do not do that.

If you are coding a website and has to add code specific for Chrome you can be pretty sure that everyone will be on the latest version. Same goes for Firefox. On IE you have to also take into consideration the people who are stuck on old versions like IE 8. It blows my mind that the browser version is tied to the OS version.

I won't be changing browse anytime soon, but it seems like Microsoft has fixed/improved some of the issues I got with IE which is nice.
