I want positive pressure in my Define R5

Go to solution Solved by WereCat,

Just get another 140mm Fractal fan and put it in front and you are set. They are quiet and good enough.

Hi

I want to keep the dust outside of my Fractal Design Define R5, i.e. I want positive air pressure.

There are two fans preinstalled in the case, one front intake fan and one rear exhaust fan: Fractal Design Dynamic GP-14

http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/case-fans/dynamic-series/dynamic-gp-14

Specs of the included GP-14:

Rotational speed [RPM]: 1000
Acoustical noise [dB (A)]: 18.9
Maximum air flow [CFM]: 68.4
Maximum pressure [mm H2O]: 0.71

I want to keep my top panels, because... well it looks better:

One fan catched my eye. It is the Corsair Air Series SP120 PWM Quiet Edition High Static Pressure.

I know there are 140s out there but those are louder and of course my pc should continue being quiet.

Specs of the SP120:

Rotational speed [RPM]: 1450
Acoustical noise [dB (A)]: 23

Maximum air flow [CFM]: 37.85
Maximum pressure [mm H2O]: 1.29

My questions are:

  1. Does it make sense to remove the preinstalled front fan and put one SP120 into its place instead, in order to create positive pressure? I would keep my preinstalled exhaust fan in this case. (see what I did there?)
  2. If option one doesn't create enough pressure, should I get a second SP120 for the front and... A. have only one exhaust fan? or B. put my second Fractal Design fan in the top?
  3. Are there better options for a quiet, high pressure fan? Would the Noctua be muuch better, even though the color is a turnoff?
  4. Do you see any other options I have, regarding my fan placement and choosing?

Regards and thanks in advance,

besuto

Aren't 140's quieter? Or is this some special fan that is louder then it's 120mm variant?

The Quiet Edition is only available in 120mm, unfortunately. This means that the only 140mm Static Pressure fan has LEDs and a noise level of 29dB.

Thanks everybody for the help. I will go with a second front fan, without replacing any preinstalled fan.
