Best Budget Ivy Bridge CPU?

Go to solution Solved by stconquest,

I would suggest moving right up to Haswell:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($241.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($60.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $302.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

The Xeon is like an i7 as it has hyperthreading.  It has a locked multiplier, so no heavy overclocking like the i7 4770K or 4790K.

I currently have a build that works decent for what I use it for but I really could use overall better performance and power. Especially with video editing which is one of my major duties at my work. After running some tests I know my bottleneck is my CPU since it's an older Intel Core i3-2105. The specs of my build are as follows

  • Intel Core i3-2105
  • 16GB G.Skill 1066MHz RAM
  • 2TB Seagate Desktop SSHD
  • 500GB Seagate Barracuda HDD
  • Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB
  • 500W PSU
  • Antec P70 Case

I'm wondering if someone could help me figure out the best quad core CPU that will give me good overall performance but also do well with heavy strains of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. Thank you.

If it's your major job you might want to consider X99

Ummm, herm...

I believe the 5770 is more likely to be a bottleneck between those two but I won't bother.

Whatever you can afford on Ivy Bridge is probably what you should get, if that makes sense. I suggest getting an i7 3770 for a significant amount of performance increase as going up to an i5 may not make a huge difference.

The GPU is a bigger bottleneck than the CPU? How do you figure?

i3s are much more capable than most give credit for having hyperthreading and quite decent single threaded performance.

A 5770 is half as powerful as a modern R9 270 which is not a good thing. That can take quite a toll on rendering times.

For the price of a 3770 I believe an R9 290 or 290X would give you a big help. You can also get an i7 now and save up for a better GPU later. Your choice really. Either way, it probably won't be cheap.

Since your doing video-editing as your job.

I would look into the i7 range. (i7-3770 etc)

I would seriously recommend the cheapest xeon with HT from the haswell range.

Nvidia is to Dr Dre Beets as AMD is to KFC.

One makes you broke, the other you can get more of and have a midnight snack from the fridge when hungry again. Once you go Nvidia, you go broked, turn into an Elitist, or get the incorrect amount of VRAM.

I was only 9 years old. I loved Fifflaren so much, I had all the NiP merchandise and matches pirated. I prayed to Fifflaren every night before bed. Thanking him for the life I have been given. Fifflaren is love I say. Fifflaren is life. My dad hears and calls me a fuckhead. I knew he was just jelly of my passion for Fifflaren. I called him a Sw@yer. He hits me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now, and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel someone touching me. I feel someone touching me. It's Fifflaren. I am so happy. He whispers in my ear; "this is my pyjama". He grabs me with his powerful Swedish hands and puts me on my hands and knees. I'm ready. I spread my ass cheeks for Fifflaren. He penetrates my butt-hole. It hurts so much but I do it for Fifflaren. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Fifflaren. He roars a viking roar as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. Fifflaren looks straight into his eyes and says; "He is a ninja now". Fifflaren is love, Fifflaren is life

Wow that was a very fast and very helpful response from the community! Looks like I'm going to have to save up and upgrade to the Haswell Xeon with a new mobo. Thanks everyone!

Unless you are going to find a use for your old CPU and mobo, just upgrade to an i7-3770, which is a direct drop-in upgrade from your current i3. Compared to the Haswell Xeon E3-1231 V3, it's only about a 5% performance reduction, being at the same clock speeds.
