Just the general closed vs open back headphone.

Peronally i prefer K702, but I prefer K712 or K7xx over K702 probably

It probably depends more on your listening environment and what you intend to use them for.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE open back headphones for production and mixing, but they are loud as hell outside the headphones (no bueno for quiet public places(or recording in a vocal booth)) AND let a lot of outside noise in (no bueno for LOUD public places, lol).  If it were for me, in the studio here, I'd have the k7xx and run!  If they were going to be a travel set (airports, busses etc...) closed back is gonna work out better.

This is only one of the things to balance when you decide but there is plenty on the net about open back vs. closed back and how it tweaks frequency response and... SCIENCE... but people often forget to plan on WHERE they'll be using the headphones.  Good luck, hope this helps!

So if I want to listen to music in public without having a boom box strapped to my head I should go with the custom one pro plus set, right?

What would you reccomend around the 250$ mark? Ive heard people say good things about this set, they're closed, and I like the switchable plates.

Pls strap boom box to head and report back... pls post video, haha!  Yes, that is what I meant there.  The closed backs will protect your tunes from more incoming noise, as well as protecting innocent bystanders from having to listen to the same track as you.  My coworkers notified me quickly in this situation that they weren't fans of slayer... dummies!

I don't know much about the custom one pro plus, but if you're not completely set on them, you may want to give the ATH M50s from audio technica a listen!  Great reviews, and I like them personally, but that's just me.  I think they just came out with a new version too!

Can they be driven by a phone/PC without need for an amp?

They don't "need" an amp, meaning that they'll work just fine rolling off of a phone or any normal device but they'll sound even BETTER with one, haha.

Define just fine.

"Just fine" meaning that you'll get plenty of volume, a nice flat frequency response (not too bass heavy, not too tinny) and they'll sound generally great.  If you're worried about it, you could stop at a guitar center/sam ash or something of that sort and see if they have a demo set out.

COP's impedance is low, and their sensitivity is high. The do NOT need an amp. Anyone suggesting "but they'll sound better" with an amp is trying to sell you something or reassure their placebo.

So I'd have to get an amp to get the full experience? I'll go with the custom one plus pair for less clutter, and it'd still sound very good.

Same story different chapter.

Volts RMS required to reach 90dB SPL: 0.056 Vrms

Impedance @ 1kHz: 17 Ohms

Power Needed for 90d BSPL 0.18 mW

Broadband Isolation in dB (100Hz to 10kHz): -16 dBr

I don't think anybody said the custom ones needed an amp, and the only reason an amp would help is if the amp had in-line EQ taking some of the mix off of the device, which is what I was after when saying the ATH M50s, although they sound fine without.  I like to change my levels around a bit, depending on which device I'm using.  Not selling anything, in the case that you meant me, haha.

Edit:  It's purely an opinion of the listener, I'm picky, that's all.

Having a device for altering EQs frequently is fine - suggesting to someone that an amp improves the performance of a headphone is not the same thing.

I suppose I should've clarified more. I'm sorry op, please don't fire me, lol. Was just leaving all the gritty details out in the event that he didn't want one right now.

I'm a fan of the ATH-Mxx series but for the same amount of money I think I'd be looking pretty hard at the new AKG K553 too.  Massdrop has them right now for $139 for the next four days.  Might also consider the Beyer DT770 and maybe one of the Vmoda.

If AKG is still using the same pads on the K553 then they are shitty as hell. I think some used Sony MDR 1R is the best choice for on the go headphones right now. They can be found at around $100. If you want new, I think they're like $170.
